Interesting. Apparently at the time that the UK did the long/measured drop it was seen as a humane method of execution by virtue of how quickly it could be done. Top record was about 7 seconds from the prisoner stepping onto the platform.

Always wondered something similar myself about these cartel videos, if theres no way out, why not make a run for it? Just be enough of a pain in the ass that they put you down with a bullet and not a butterknife

Because it's an extremely masculine culture and that's not respectable, that and they'd probably just shoot you in the leg and then figure out something worse than they were planning originally.

Hadn't considered that until now, but I wonder if that was the point. The cartel likes to play mind games through video (like ISIS). "If the captives outnumber them, and they still give up, what unspeakable horror were they threating them with?" Your mind does all the work for them.
