Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp all go down in major outage

The real annoying thing about Facebook services going down is I can't use whatsapp at all right now. Not so great since SMS on my phone more or less doesn't work.

On the other hand, right now I can't receive any retardation from the groups I'm part of either, so I suppose it balances out.

As many of you know, DNS for FB services has been affected and this is likely a symptom of the actual issue, and that's that BGP peering with Facebook peering routers has gone down, very likely due to a configuration change that went into effect shortly before the outages happened (started roughly 1540 UTC). There are people now trying to gain access to the peering routers to implement fixes, but the people with physical access is separate from the people with knowledge of how to actually authenticate to the systems and people who know what to actually do, so there is now a logistical challenge with getting all that knowledge unified. Part of this is also due to lower staffing in data centers due to pandemic measures.

It’s happening worldwide tho. So it would be *most* governments but it’s also possibly a hacker thing? I really really suck at technology so idk.

If I'm not mistaken, the US Gov has jurisdiction and a fair amount of control over a lot of the critical Backbone of DNS, it wouldn't be outside their capability to throw the switch on them. Why, and whether its legal, would be a whole seperate matter.

I’m inclined to think that the concept of legality doesn’t really matter in certain... uh... groups.


Edit to avoid double posting: Google isn’t working either. For me, at least.
 
The only complaint I have is knowing I have to now call my gun store for my 92X on layaway versus just DMing my buddy who works in that inventory department for it.

Oh well.
