🐱 Owl House Was Canceled Due To Exec Deciding It Didn't Fit the Disney Brand

Dana Terrace, the creator of Disney Channel's The Owl House, offers some clarity on why the animated series' third and final season was cut short.
Dana Terrace, the creator of The Owl House, clarified why Disney decided to cut the animated series short during its third season.

In a statement posted to Reddit, Terrace explained that the show's cancellation wasn't due to ratings or the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but whether or not the series fit into Disney's brand. "At the end of the day, there are a few business people who oversee what fits into the Disney brand and one day one of those guys decided [The Owl House] didn't fit that 'brand,'" Terrace wrote. "The story is serialized (BARELY compared to any average anime lmao), our audience skews older, and that just didn't fit this one guy's tastes. That's it! Ain't that wild? Really grinds my guts, boils my brain, kicks my shins, all the things. It sucks but it is what it is."

Terrace also addressed concerns over whether the series was canceled due to its LGBTQ+ representation, to which she explained that while there were issues with the show airing in certain countries, she wouldn't "assume bad faith against the people I work with in LA." While the ongoing pandemic forced nearly every Disney show to "tighten their belts," with episodes cut and budgets constrained across the board, The Owl House"took the biggest bullet and I wasn't given the option of a 'season 4 when parks open again,'" according to Terrace.

"They just wanted to be done with TOH and this was the perfect chance to do that. Even getting the consolation s3 episodes was difficult, apparently. Hard to say, I wasn't allowed to be a part of any conversations until I was just... Told. Wasn't even allowed to present my case," said Terrace.

Disney Channel ordered a shortened third season of the animated series, announcing in May 2021 that the season would consist of three 44-minute specials. Terrace also wrote in her statement that the decision to end The Owl Houseafter Season 3 was made before the end of the show's first season. "Our ratings were GOOD (for a Channel show during the streaming wars lmao) but they were also incomplete," Terrace said. "This decision was made, to my knowledge, before [Season 1, Episode 18, "Agony of a Witch"] premiered and WELL before we were on Disney +."

The Owl House was recently awarded a Peabodyfor "building a wildly inventive other world that makes room for everyone and giving queer kids a welcome template alongside which to explore their own budding creative energies." The series has been commemorated for its LGBTQ+ representation from Disney Channel and other animators alike, including Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch, who congratulated Terrace for telling the LGBTQ+ story he could not.

"In any case, there are still a lot of awesome TOH episodes left to come out, and all the support IS seen and appreciated," Terrace concluded. "Not only does it support the crew but it encourages studios to take bigger risks on shows coming down the pipeline. And, who knows? Maybe there's a future for the Owl House world if DTV has different people in charge."

Season 2 of The Owl House is now available to watch in full on Disney+ and DisneyNOW, with Season 3 set to premiere sometime in 2022.

"our audience skews older"

See, there's the actual problem you sped. They wanted a show for kids so they could sell toys or whatever. You gave them a show for Twitter. But please continue to cope and seethe all over the Internet. I'm sure that'll help your next show get picked up.

One Youtube posted a interesting rant on ClownfishTV's vlog.

What is the Disney brand at this point? They own stuff like The Muppets, Spider-Man, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Simpsons, Ice Age, Family Guy, Planet of the Apes, Die Hard, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Kingdom Hearts, and Avatar. Disney doesn't have a clear brand any more. Back then they were just a family-friendly company that made movies about princesses and cartoon characters, now they are just a big faceless company that wants to own stuff, doesn't matter if it fits their brand, whatever that even means now.

Shes shittalking the executives of the largest media company in the world to justify why her Harry Potter/ Little Witch Academia ripoff with lesbian children that is only watched by broken adult children is getting canceled. I'm going to take a wild guess that Terrace isn't going to be getting major work for awhile despite her numerous awards.

We really lost a scintillating writing talent when this one got the boot, didn't we?

What even constitutes a "season" any more? In the 1960s it meant weekly or near weekly shows from September through at least April, often May. Something like the original Star Trek ran for only three seasons, but has something like 80 episodes total. Compare that to the crap Paramount excretes out nowadays and calls a "season."

And the irony that owls are obligate carnivores, heterosexual (typically) monogamous for life predators never ceases to amuse me whenever this show is mentioned. They also hate to an irrational degree (and are hated by in the same way and to the same degree) crows. Crows often being a stand-in for what group in American folklore? 🤔

Dumb bitch got 3 seasons to tell whatever gay story she wanted on Disney of all channels, who are notorious for 2-4 seasons at most animated shows, and is such an utter spaz that she found some way to act like a complete fuck nut about it when they told her she could only have those 3 seasons. She was lucky to even receive an explanation, most other shows just get booted with no rhyme or reason given.

Good luck getting hired in the future after being such an ungrateful cunt.

She probably will because she has connections with actually talented people and successful shows. Like isn't she in relationship with the Gravity Falls guy? Who is friends with Rick and Morty guy?

Here's the reddit post;

I wasn't planning on making a post because it's too late for a normal s3 pickup and the real reason we were let go is not as exciting as some of the wild theories I've seen. But there's a bit too much misinformation so I hope I can clear stuff up. Also, posting here instead of twitter because this thread would be too long and too easy to take out of context.

Why is Owl House ending so soon? Why was s3 cut?

Was it the LGBT+ rep?
While we have had issues airing in a few countries (and are just straight up banned in a few more) I'm not gonna assume bad faith against the people I work with in LA.

Was it covid/budget related reasons? Every show had to tighten their belts. Budgets were constrained and episodes were cut across the board. But we took the biggest bullet and I wasn't given the option of a "season 4 when parks open again". They just wanted to be done with TOH and this was the perfect chance to do that. Even getting the consolation s3 episodes was difficult, apparently. Hard to say, I wasn't allowed to be a part of any conversations until I was just... Told. Wasn't even allowed to present my case. LOVE the transparency and openness here (this is sarcasm).

So it was the ratings. That argument doesn't hold water either. Our ratings were GOOD (for a Channel show during the streaming wars lmao) but they were also incomplete. This decision was made, to my knowledge, before Agony of a Witch premiered and WELL before we were on Disney +. Also, how are you gonna judge ratings when you don't rerun the show you're trying to measure? Get OUTTA here you silly billies.

SO WHAT WAS IT?! At the end of the day, there are a few business people who oversee what fits into the Disney brand and one day one of those guys decided TOH didn't fit that "brand". The story is serialized (BARELY compared to any average anime lmao), our audience skews older, and that just didn't fit this one guy's tastes. That's it! Ain't that wild? Really grinds my guts, boils my brain, kicks my shins, all the things. It sucks but it is what it is.

Maybe there's a future for the Owl House world if DTV has different people in charge.

For now, we have some exciting specials to go all out on.

I'll be logging off reddit now, so I won't be answering questions. Just wanted to drop this. GO WATCH AMPHIBIA S3! BYYYEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

-Dana
At least she said two sensible things. Firstly not answering any other questions AKA not digging the already deep hole deeper and encouraging people to watch the superior show.

I caught a view episodes at the nephews house here and there.

It was like gravity falls. They wanted to have an over arching series plot. But IMO kept jumping off the rails to play Hogwars school, Crazy aunt back story, and worse of all too many self insert queer romance points.

I liked adventure time over a decade ago and I really do blame pendleton ward for this shit. have a fucking 12 minute kids cartoon and maybe every once in away you sneak in something kinda meta or deep. so the parents will get something too

Disney wants to avoid a My Little Pony type deal with creepy adult fans. smart move

I hate to break it to you, but shit like this exists because a full 50% of Disney plus subscribers are 'childless households' according to an interview Chapek gave to Reuters:

"What we didn't realize was the non-family appeal that a service like Disney+ would have," Chapek said via online video to the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference.

"In fact, over 50% of our global marketplace don't have kids," he added. "When 50% of the people in Disney+ don't have kids, you really have the opportunity now to think much more broadly about the nature of your content."

In light of the fact that half their audience comprises a load of Moviebob's and Lindsay Ellis', you can expect a shit load more globohomo coming soon to Disney plus.

Well, Disney+ has a lot of all-ages stuff like capeshit and Star Wars, also outside of America comes with Star which has more adult content(pretty much hulu).

With that said, still, a lot of weirdos will be watching the kids cartoons and getting off to them.
