Earnings are from August 2019 to October 2021, so "only" $100,000 per year. Still crazy though.

I'm going to be the unpopular viewpoint of the thread and say I'm not really mad or disappointed at the majority of these people on this list. I might not be a fan of their content, but that doesn't mean I harbor any personal ill wills against them. I'm generally pretty happy if people win the lottery or they manage to strike gold in the most unlikely of places I don't really care or have a problem. I don't do content creation or twitch streaming because I just don't like it. I don't like sitting all day on a computer and playing video games for hours at a time my ADHD would make me want to blow my brains out.

With that said, a lot of people who win the lottery do end up falling into debt or running themselves dry. So, in the long term, I'm curious how well they can manage this money they're earning or if they'll end up slipping through the cracks and falling into unpayable expenses. They also never have business prospects so what ends up happening is that money in their bank account stagnates and all those purchases and long term monthly expenses begin to collapse on them and they inevitably fall into irrelevancy and then they never can reclaim that income. So I'm more curious about what they do with that money, do they plan for the long term? Or do they CONSOOM?

Yeah, respect the hustle. It's the people who give these people money who are more deserving of criticism/derision/pity. I don't like many of these streamers, but I don't give them any of my money and it's therefore not my problem. If someone shitty takes your money, get mad at them. If someone shitty takes someone else's money, that's their problem, especially if the transaction was entirely voluntary, as it is here. Keep your money for things you approve of and let these people burn in a fire of their own making.

Stuff like this should be expected for a while. I don't think any tech company's been immune from the high turnover in the sector, so you've got a lot of people with a large amount of access and not a whole lot of experience.

One of the alleged theories I had read on I think Hacker News is that October is typically a month when new sysadmins are onboarded, and that may explain all these new gaffs (which you would think would stop being a thing if we Endless September'd infrastructure this bad every year) but there's renewed federal interest in hardening our "cyber" which could be code for more regulation on leak disclosure or access.

I just think security standards have become really lazy and nothing will be done to fix this until we actually have more severe punishments than fines, but that's just me. Is it concerning? Yes. But the issue is as much bad security as it is HOW MUCH DATA companies can slurp up without having to abide by stringent requirements and how its can be accessed by other companies and governments.

I'm not saying we need a PCI-DSS for PII, but the EU had the right idea with the GDPR requiring policies behind deleting PII and disclosures.

The closest estimate we can get is by counting up superchats, but that doesn't account for memberships and monetization. Even if you could get that information, you still don't know how much of it is going to Cover. And while we do know that Pekora is the top vtuber by hours watched, hours watched does not translate to earnings.

Finally as has been mentioned before, none of these numbers account for sponsorships, which are a significant source of income for any popular streamer.
