Auburn woman in U.S. on student visa charged with setting fires at Montgomery’s First Baptist Church

An Auburn woman has been charged with setting fire to a historic Montgomery church last week.

Xiaoqin Yan, 27, is charged with second-degree arson, according to court records made public Tuesday. Yan was arrested Oct. 4 and remains held in the Montgomery County Detention Center on $30,000 bond.

According to charging documents against Yan, she used an “open flame to ignite an ignitable liquid,” causing $25,000 in damage to First Baptist Church on Perry Street.

According to court records, Yan is a citizen of China who is in the U.S. on a student visa. Her visa has now been revoked.

Because of the revocation, she has been ordered held until she appears in court on Wednesday.

The fire was discovered shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the South Perry Street Church.

Pastor Mark L. Bethea posted on Facebook that the fires were started in the sanctuary and the historic Stakely Sanctuary. Firefighters, he said, arrived quickly and minimized what he said could have been a catastrophic event.

Bethea said the blaze destroyed several pews and damaged the carpet in the sanctuary and did some damage to the carpet in the Stakely Sanctuary. There was smoke and soot throughout the church and the reception office was destroyed.

The affidavit states that Yan was captured on surveillance footage setting the fires. A motive has not been released.

Montgomery Fire Lt. Jason Selman said they expect to release more information later today on the muti-agency investigation.

The church is over 100 years old and has an interesting history. In what may or may not be a coincidence, Alabama's Gov. Kay Ivey is listed as a member of this church.

I have interacted with main land Chinese woman about this age. Believe me they are not to be fucked with.

They do not see the world like we do and take offense pretty quickly. And have no issue vandalizing property, hurting a dog etc when they are upset.

They generally are very smart but have no idea how to interact with normal people and get upset when you don't follow normal convention as they understand it from back home.

Is she really an Alabama woman if she's on student visa?

Asians in general are fucking insane when it comes to tourist locals as well. I witnessed on Asian woman climb over the railing at Niagara falls so her dad or boyfriend or whatever could take her photo. Bear in mind there is like half an inch of ledge beyond the railing on wet slippery pavement. Everything below that is sheered off cliff down to the end of the falls where a shitload of boulders are.

What confusing wording.

"Auburn, Alabama woman" and "An Auburn woman" make me think she's from a place called Auburn in Alabama, USA. But her being in on a Student Visa makes me assume she must be from anywhere except the USA. Unless I'm being an America centric asshole and forgetting that other countries can issue student visas as well and the story might not take place in Auburn Alabama.

Had to carefully read the article (and Google) to make sure this wasn't a case of the same name being used to refer to multiple cities in multiple countries.

Wonder if the goal is to fuck with Twitter previews and people who don't read the article.

If she was a student going to Auburn, someone from the church probably said "Roll Tide," and the mix of Auburn Student and Soulless Chinaman combined to new heights of rivalry based vandalism.

Commies hate religion, and commies gonna commie.

Probably a case of "Can't say Chinese woman or Chinese immigrant in the title because that'd be racist."

You're right. The title makes it sound like a white nationalists setting firing to a historic black baptists church in the south. Not a Chinese student on a visa.

Aren't Asians, in general, like this? I got my ass chewed out by this Asian guy for "stealing" quarters from his laundromat.

They’re also playing on the assumption of non-Southerners that this is an attack on a black church, because everybody associates Montgomery, AL Baptist churches with MLK Jr. and the civil rights movement.

But nope, it’s the First Baptist Church, Southerners know that a *first* Baptist church is rarely black. And this one is not, this is a white church.

I wonder if the arsonist knew that though lol. I mean, my first thought was maybe she thought she was getting revenge for all the black attacks and murders of Asians.
