538's method is... abnormal to say the least. It elements the 'outliers' and beings them into a pre-considered normal range from the current average. The problem is that a strong drop or simply systemic polling bias means that range is hilariously off. 538 will follow the trend better than RCP, but will also consistently have Democrats higher than they should be.

Serious question: at what point dowes the concern parties start to demand funding a new drop off point? Californicatingshithole isn’t the only port is this country, they have many other places they could go, so at what point does someone flipped the finger at California? Because if I was a big corporation that was losing money because of stupid rules, I would definitely tried to do business elsewhere.

There are plenty of ports on the east coast but the shortest trip is from Asia to California. To use any of these other ports they'd have to take the much longer trip through the Panama Canal.

As for why California, it really comes down to geography.

Most of the west coast is California.

California has natural bays that offer protection from the ocean and the deep water needed for these ships.

It's a very short trip from the port to I80 and in turn the rest of the country

You'd have to find a place in Washington / Oregon that has good year round weather, a protected bay, deep water and build the highway system out. It's not impossible, but it's a massive investment.
