Late but I finally decided to watch The Closer just to see what everyone on Twitter was screeching about.

I’ve never heard of David Chappelle so this is my first time watching anything of his, and because of all the criticism I expected something a lot more... Extreme. I’m an autist so maybe there’s something I missed, but to me it seemed that he actually respects trans people but just wants them to stop screeching about pronouns, be able to take things with a bit of humor, and stop thinking they’re more oppressed than black people. Nothing he said came off as hateful, just exhausted/worried, but trannies tend to see genuine concern as hate so what was I expecting. Chappelle actually points out that trans people deserve basic human respect like anyone else, but I guess that will never be enough for them.

I’m baffled by this idea that you don’t need to watch something to understand it. The special was completely different than what I was expecting based on what I heard about it, and it makes me think that trannies really do consider themselves some protected class that should never be poked fun at or else anyone within earshot will go on a tranny-murdering rampage (even though Chappelle makes jokes about white/black/Jewish/gay/whatever people and no one’s accusing him of killing them). It also makes me think that trans people consider words to have this kind of power in the first place because they themselves will have a mental breakdown if someone says something slightly mean about them, so they assume everyone else is as easily affected, which is why they’re so hung up on comebacks and “owning” transphobes, or calling TERFs ugly. They think their words have power because they’re weak to the words of others, but well-adjusted people don’t operate like them.

Chappelle also makes a good point about how the trans community eats their own if anyone dare strays from the popular opinion, but that seemed to completely fly over their heads.

That's what kills me about the special. It's absolutely trans and LGBT friendly, he spends 35 minutes praising the LGBT community, then goes on a memorial rant for 25 minutes about his tranny friend. You get about 10 minutes of non-gay fellating content. Although his fight with the lesbian story was beyond amusing.

Introduction​

Trans liberation is part of feminism. Fighting for autonomy and freedom must be a fight for everyone, and there should be no room for transphobia or TERFs in feminist organising. We are committed to not only a trans inclusive but a trans liberatory feminism. This guide helps people understand what TERFs are and what makes “TERF-ism” a distinct subcategory of transphobia, how to spot TERF ideology, how to deal with it, and how to make spaces trans inclusive.

What is a TERF?
“TERF” stands for “Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist”. TERF ideology is a specific form of transphobia. The primary TERF assertion is that trans women are not women, and accordingly have no place in women’s spaces. TERFs define misogyny as sex-based oppression, which results from being “biologically female” (a term they define flexibly, but can often be taken to mean people who are assigned female at birth).

This is reductive and works on a narrow definition of what constitutes “biological” sex. TERFs claim all women, on the basis of biology, experience the same kinds of oppression. This completely glosses over the way that gender and sex are both systems of power that interact with other systems of power and oppression, such as racism, ableism, and colonialism. Women are not a homogenous group, and some people who experience misogyny are not women. Oppression can occur on the basis of physiological characteristics (e.g. limiting access to abortions) and fighting that oppression is feminist work, but there are many other manifestations of misogyny and oppression that are essential to feminist liberation.

Spotting TERFs in the Field​

Most TERFs don’t call themselves TERFs. Terminology evolves over time, so while the following common terms are signs to look out for, it is more worthwhile to examine what the underlying ideology of a claim is. The core characteristics of TERFs are a conservative, binary, essentialist conception of sex as the be-all-end-all, and a deep hatred for trans women, couched in the language of feminism and feminist theory. Most trans people reading anything indicated as feminist work will keep an eye out for this way of thinking because we have to; as an ally it is worth learning to do the same and looking at your own writing with a critical eye.

• TERFs often self-refer as “gender critical” or “adult human female”
• They refer to believing in “sex-based rights”, “LGB rights”, and “protecting women and girls”

These two points are so fucking inoffensive it really makes one wonder if looking for TERFs makes you a good guy or not.

• They refer to trans people as “TRAs” (Trans Rights Activists), “the trans lobby”, “the trans debate”, and to trans women as “TIMs” (Trans Identified Males)
• They typically dislike the term cis(gender), and may say “I don’t have a gender identity” or “I don’t have pronouns”

Usually, they say "I am a woman" rather than no pronouns. We know our pronouns, can you tell what they are?

I've seen more enbies say they have no pronouns or identity than regular old terfs. Imagine being enbyphobic in this document. Also lol they didn't bother including TiF because the author is kissing the ass of Transwomen only in spite of being he/them enby I'm assuming.

• TERFs will refer to issue of trans people in bathrooms or changing rooms as being about “predators” and co-opt the language of sexual violence to refer to trans people existing in public spaces
• Their narratives represent transmasculine people as confused, redeemable, and often as children and teenagers “corrupted” by the “trans lobby”, and transfeminine people as predatory, aggressive, and the ones doing the corrupting.

Top point is a loaded statement. Yes on the first part, "PUBLIC SPACES" without specifying what those spaces are are weasel words. "Public spaces like.... bathrooms. And gym lockers. And spas. And uh...." At least throw in a drag queen story hour as a panic defense.

Bottom point: yeah that's wrong. Around a third of transmen are irredeemable coomers or personality disorder related nightmares. The ones who transitioned after 18 should be treated like adults, the ones affected by grooming should be treated as such. Sorry to all you detrans out there reading this.

I'm still baffled at how this is so hurtful. This is such a low end of oppression that nonwhite would look at you and tell you to suck it up. What are the long term affects of these thought patterns? What harm have they caused? What is the emotional impact of all this? Come on guys, at least tell me someone killed themselves over this.

Talking to TERFs​

Online​

The key advice is don’t. Arguing with a stranger on Twitter won’t change their mind. If it’s someone you know and you want to engage, the best approach is to privately message (and if possible, call them and follow the advice in the next section). People are often defensive and conscious of how they appear when confronted publicly on social media, or in a comments section.

Arguing with TERFs online means that you’ll be bringing transphobia into the timeline of your trans friends and followers, who won’t want to see that. Some particularly committed TERFs may even start harassing trans people you know if you’ve interacted publicly recently.

Bully them, but one on one. They might dogpile you otherwise. Make sure to confront them in real life instead of online.

Why is doing this shit online important? Not everyone gives a shit about social media. Hell, half the people who have social media barely touch it outside of vacation photography posting and funny memes. You're an adult at university. Log off. Go study.

In-Person​

It is worth talking to someone you know (maybe a friend or a family member), as the unique danger of TERF rhetoric is that it is styled to sound like feminism. It also is increasingly normalised in the British media, so TERF talking points might be the first thing someone’s ever really heard about trans people. People often get pulled in by one particular topic, so the best time to have a conversation is early.

Why? What harm will it do? Will it arm the people with mean words and make trans people commit bathtub toaster? Is it like the AIDS crisis that forced people out of jobs in witchhunts? What is the end goal here?

The first thing is to try and figure out where they got it from. Did they hear it from a friend, or read a news article? If they’ve read something. and it’s the first thing they’ve heard about trans people or the first time they’ve taken an interest, it may be relatively easy to inform them about where they’re going wrong, and why what they’re backing is harmful. If they’ve heard it from someone they trust and care about, consider how you frame the argument to avoid it becoming about personal relationships, which may make them defensive.

Ok, what arguments should I make that say "these people with penises or formerly had penises should be allowed in the girl's restrooms"? This is a genuine question: how do I convince the layman to my side without using academic talk? I don't think 54 year old Bobby the butcher will be into the nuances of "Our behaviors are shaped by our gender and what society expects from us, and trans women were born with the souls of women and are women as they identify as such because gender is a feeling of identity and not your body." Something more akin to "Yeah there's less sex crime in places that allow mtf transwomen to pee in the gender bathrooms" or something like that. I pulled that fact out of my ass so I'm quite sure it is NOT true, can you provide me with specific help and arguments instead?

Like a lot of reactionary ideology, there comes a point where the particular argument becomes unimportant. It won’t be helpful to unpick the false assumptions if someone is committed to the underlying ideology itself. In this situation, if you still want to have the discussion, it’s best to talk through what the endpoint of their ideology is - either they will commit to it, in which case there’s not much to be done besides reducing the harm they can do to others, or they will consider what their views imply and perhaps become open to being dissuaded. If the person has strong feminist commitments, it may also be worth bringing up that TERFs (particularly the famous ones who figurehead the movement) spend a lot of time working with the far-right.

Meaningful Trans Inclusion​

The language of TERF ideology is ever changing, always with the aim of sounding reasonable. If your approach to spotting and fighting TERFs is purely based on words and optics, then you’re vulnerable to being taken onboard by a new dogwhistle or talking point. It’s not enough to disavow TERFs in words alone and say “Trans Rights are Human Rights'' or “Trans Women are Women”. The only way to prevent yourself falling prey to TERF talking points is to develop a critical understanding of concepts like sex and gender and the systems of power and oppression that underly them. TERF ideology incorrectly analyses and obscures these relations, and the best defense is to have a better explanation.

Trans liberation is a feminist fight and transfeminism is feminism we should all be doing. More than inclusion we should be aiming for liberation. That said, here are some things you can do to go beyond just making statements and support trans people in your feminist work:

Imagine handing this guide to a male engineering major who doesn't have time to do any activities unrelated to his major.

• Create spaces in which someone’s presence isn’t questioned, or required to be explained, based on their appearance, and that trans people are comfortable coming to
• Trans liberation is an essential part of feminism, and in the current climate any feminist organisation doing valuable work will have trans liberation and transfeminism integral to what they are doing

How? What direct or indirect benefit does having transwomen in my feminism help? I'm serious: what articles should I give people to show how cool transwomen are making gains for women's rights? No, to articles on how they're the first woman military leader, but on laws and social norms, things that impact ALL women.

• Ensure trans people lead discussion and action on issues that affect them
• Encourage people to unlearn the gender and sex binary and teach themselves why it is reductive and harmful (see the reading list)
• Engage in and support the struggles of all marginalized people. Many feminist spaces that are hostile to trans people are also racist and ableist. Feminist work needs to be anti-racist and accessible

There is a distinction to be made. An adult male's sexual orientation is not defined by the fact that he sexually abused a boy or a girl. When you say that 90% of the predators were gay, you are conflating sex offenders who had male victims with gay men. Pedophiles are opportunistic, so they tend to go after whatever they can get. People are more protective over young girls and so male pedophiles have less opportunity to go after them. In fact, most child molesters are heterosexual when it comes to sexual attraction to adults.

Russia in particular associates homosexuals with rapists for a number of reasons. Rape in the Gulag was rampant, (though ironically it was the homosexuals that were most often subjected to rape by other prisoners). The same goes for prisons. There is also an attempt by the Orthodox Church to associate pedophilia with homosexuality because the church is homophobic. By associating the two, the church can make its followers averse to homosexuality. The same goes for the modern Russian government, which long has considered homosexuals and pedophiles to be synonymous.

This idea is so entrenched in Russian society that the Russian equivalent to the word faggot actually comes from the word pederast. Sure the people in the video may have gone after pedophiles, but it is much more likely that they were going after gay men who they found on the internet or grindr. It was trendy for nationalists at that time to lure gay men to a discreet location to kill them or humiliate them on camera. You'll often hear in the videos (which are not for the faint of heart) that the perpetrators call the victims pedophiles and child molesters, but that is more so a slur or their own conflation of the two.

Usually, when discussing pedophilia, the argument goes is that pedophiles don't have a preference. It is a crime of opportunity. If you examine the most popular studies and websites detailing that, they all come from the 1980s.

Now, given what we know about the Catholic Church abuse scandal, we discover that the rate of abuse was 75:25 in favour of boys vs girls. Did these priests choose these boys out of a crime of opportunity, or was it a preference?

Here is one article. It's freely available as a PDF. Mind you, this was done in 2008 and we have had more cases and reports since then.

Here's a PT article. 4 out of the 5 abused were male, coming from around 4% of deacons. Considering big 'family' churches were involved - hence girls also being sexually abused - the absolute tilt and preference towards boys can't be explained by 'crime of opportunity' alone. I've tried to use non-religious sources but Church Militant has many articles on openly gay priests (or closeted gay priests and being proud of it) assaulting boys and other priests knowing about it.

Judith Reisman has written on it extensively and she did discover that pedophiles do have a type - much like AGPs, there are homosexual and heterosexual pedophiles.

The same can also be said of Boy Scout abuse where male Scout Masters got away with abusing boys since the 1950's. They only chose boys. Crime of opportunity? Perhaps...but even serial killers have a preference. Pederasty is a long running theme in gay culture and you will see it with the more open gay authors or celebrities. George Takei admitted to being molested/groomed at 13 when he was in camp.

Does this mean all gay men are pederasts/molesters? No, but the data that exists shows they are victimized by it more than their straight peers, and it is done by other males - who chose them and them alone. Depending on who you ask or what you read, anywhere from 30-40% were molested. And that's just gay men - lesbians also have high rates. So that is an explanation for those stereotypes. It may be unpalatable, but it is what it is.

That's five people out of nearly a hundred, though. Given that 1 in 9 women were sexually abused as minors, and that 82% of CSA victims are female, I guarantee you the statistics-- 1 in 20-- are about the same for straight men. I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that you'd get the same result if you pulled up a list of 100 random straight men.
