Contra definitely veers towards statement pieces and gaudy designs. Doesn't always look good, but at least there's a defined sense of personal style that's communicating something (vs "skirt go spinny" with programmer socks) even if it tends a bit costumey.

Good pianists manage to convey a great deal of emotion showing their attachment and understanding of the work that they perform, through subtle and delicate movements. I think Rubinstein, especially in his older years shows this. But we are asking for too much, how can an emotionless vessel that sacrificed its own essence and vitality for the sake of a childish delusion be expected to show genuine feelings? The eyes of those individuals only convey a massive void (and many times lunacy as well).
