References like this are like those emotions flashcards. They aren't just useful for helping kids learn how to identify emotions, they can be helpful for helping them express themselves as well. This is that phenomenon writ large, where you can encode additional meaning with a reference to the original context.

That said, however, what we see online and in these contexts is an exaggerated version of the same, done by the SJW descendants of the "lol so randums". They aren't encoding additional meaning. They're just using references because it's brightly colored and people say "Oh Adventure Time! I know Adventure Time! Me like!"
