Newgrounds is filled with pedophiles so it's expected. Shadman was one of the reasons Newgrounds got so big as he started his art career there and his popularity transfered to the site. Tom Fulp has always protected his account, when other small artists that create less shocking content get their art deleted left and right... Shadman is basically untouchable there.

He's no Murata or Frazetta, but even from a strictly technical perspective, Shadman's not a bad artist. His inks and colours are very good, he has a sense of humor (though it's often overshadowed by the shock value), and he's one of the few online artists who has consistently been able to tap into meme culture. Gross edgelord? Yes. But that's part of his branding, part of what got him his fanbase. He's the half-Jhonen Vasquez / half-Robert Crumb of the Coomer scene.

You're totally right, in that Shadman's life is going, and will continue go, in the only direction it could. He's a heroin statistic waiting to happen, and the only thing that would surprise me is if he died before the FBI raid, rather than after it.

But the fact that Shad's got supporters, even within the professional art community, isn't really surprising either. Artists are weirdos, and if your work "clicks" with the art community itself, then it doesn't really what else you do - you can be a nonce like Degas, a BDSM race mixer like Gauguin, or a complete psychopath like Caravaggio, but so long as you're the sort of person that artists like, you'll still have your friends and supporters.
