I remember taking a sci-fi lit course in college and we were reading a book set in Thailand. My professor said something to the effect that in Thailand, they have an understanding of a third gender, ladyboy. When he said that I thought to myself that that's not a third gender, that's just the Thai way of calling someone a hermaphrodite.

The way the word is used by is to call effeminate gay men, gay crossdresser and what should be equivalent to HSTS 'transwoman' but they don't see themselves as true and honest woman as the west and there is no official gender change like in the West. Even some of those ladyboys think having a gender marker changes in IDs and driving licenses are dishonest because they're still physiologically male, there are characteristics they can't remove even hormones and surgery, and they see their transition is more of a social/cultural role and being pretty than to be all about passing because most Thai people can clock one regardless. - I think of it as similar to many 'gay men social role' third gender in other cultures.

The word was used to describe some kind of intersex conditions but it is not used in that way for a long time or if it is used in that way, it is marked as being a 'true form' of the word.

When it comes to pronouns though, it's just that our third person pronouns are situational. Some are gender-suggestive but due to nature of language it is not definite. Third person pronouns and all pronouns in Thailand is relative to speakers, situations, formal/informal, perceived social and class hierachy of someone, and we have a shitload of them. One person may use a certain pronoun for a certain person and another person may use another based on their relative relationship. And so trying to define a personal fixed pronoun in the western way is not possible. (There's also a pronoun sets reserved for The Kings where we literally have to refer ourselves as a dust under his feet, and we're trying to stamp that shit out because people are realising how tyrannical our monarchism has been)

And oh, I'm sure you're speaking about The Windup Girl, it's a book with some interesting ideas but I kind of dislike how the writer portrayed Thai people as village idiots without much personal agency. Typical of the story about travelling to 'Exotic lands', but I digress. I don't think I can complain about this without sounding like a woketard to some right-winger here though. Netflix just started doing talent funds. The first one they've done is the British Short Documentary Talent Fund, where they awarded up to £40k per winner.

The thing with talent funds is they usually come with caveats. For example, for this talent fund the brief was "Britain’s Not Boring And Here’s a Story" - so it had to be a documentary that was specifically British in nature and also had to be very quirky and unusual; there's an insight into the working class women of Billingsgate fish market, Japanese-Irish drag queens doing British Asian cabaret, a documentary about a disabled woman who's talented at equestrian sports, a look into the Northern Irish rap scene (they have very strong accents), a documentary about an apiarist who lives in the wilderness and fights for bee conservation, a documentary about that seal that ended up in the City of London (and more widely about Thames-dwelling animals) etc etc

These briefs were submitted to a panel of judges made of industry experts and Netflix professionals, who greenlit some proposals based on both merit and marketability. The documentaries are forced to be between 8 and 12 minutes, and the documentarians do retain copyright but will not have full creative control, being supervised by seasoned industry professionals. The final documentaries will be posted on Netflix UK social media, with the potential to be made into full documentaries depending on how they perform. The main purpose of a talent fund is for Netflix to find new talent that they can profit off of.

Now, I'm not sure. But I suspect this isn't what they'd demand for a "trans and non binary talent fund". Cis people would be involved in the judging panels and might reject briefs, the fund allocations might not let them make "Stephen Universe but more trans", they wouldn't have full creative control, they wouldn't be allowed to make 20 part series...

Netflix also recently launched the Fund for Creative Equity which will invest $100 million over five years into creating content that promotes diversity. Netflix does want to make stuff that features diversity, but they're looking at it holistically (e.g. "it's great we've got so many black-lead shows, but it seems like there's no content on here made by people from a Middle Eastern/North African background"). Diversity can be a real strength, bringing in a wide range of content and fresh perspectives, as any pseud who attends an international film festival will tell you.

They're also specifically aiming some of this fund at LGBT content. And as long as there's good content that's getting acclaimed, they'll make it because they'll make money off it. Even if something's only popular with a smaller niche audience, it can still do well. But they're not going to devote large swathes of money on making a lots of trans content to cater to a very small niche audience (not many people will watch it, and that niche audience will get oversaturated and not watch all that content). It's ironic that they're demanding a trans and non binary fund when Netflix is flagging that they really want to increase representation of Native American content or positive depictions of people with disabilities. It would be hilarious if they did launch a trans and non binary fund and only greenlit stuff that wasn't made by white or black trans people because they've got enough of that and they want more Asian and Pacific Islander trans content. There'd be so much seething but they wouldn't be able to seethe openly.
