Hormones greatly effect your gut and even the way you taste or crave food. I know my basic hormone levels due to my ability to enjoy coffee and certain foods during the month. I only heard the disgusting term “period shits” about ten years ago, but that just shows how hormone changes effect digestion.

I only made the connection between diet and hormones because being pregnant made me detest coffee (something I normally love). Afterwards I also noticed a few days before my my period I lost all my taste for coffee for 2-4 days, along with other foods. It made me realize my appetite levels dramatically increased or decreased according to my cycle too as well as which foods I wanted to eat.

When I was 20 I probably could have been sold on the hormones are no big deal and changing them is like taking any other medicine. But any grown woman who has lived through pregnancy, or taken different hormonal birth control pills/shots, or experienced post-part depression or menopause, etc… knows only too well how hormones can effect every atom of their being - from emotions, psychological well being, appetite, digestion, sleep, body temperature, migraine headaches, concentration, diet, etc…

I’ve suffered from horrid migraine headaches my entire life but only discovered they were triggered by hormonal fluctuation a few years ago. The right hormonal BC managed to decrease their severity, duration and occurrence by 85%.

The power hormones have over every aspect of the human body’s functions is terrifying. A old friend of mine who has a Ph.D in counseling started to fear she was suffering from a intense mental illness in her early 40’s. She became convinced she could feel bugs under her skin and it began to take over her life. Intellectually she knew it was impossible, that there were no bugs, but she still became fixated on it. She was terrified to seek treatment fearing she could lose her job if it was discovered she had some psychotic disorder but eventually sought help because it was ruining her life.

The problem was entirely hormonal, triggered by early peri-menopause. A endocrinologist managed to stabilize her hormone levels and the delusions stopped almost instantly. She only told me about this after the hormone treatment cured her. She’s now doing research into the connections between psychological disorders in women and hormones - and issue that’s woefully ignored by the medical field.

This is one of the reasons I find casually tossing hormones at anyone who walks in the door just because they say they feel like another gender is so dangerous and absurd. Most doctors are woefully ignorant about hormones too. The fact they let any doctor Rx various hormones on a informed-consent basis is just fucking insane.

Seems like he's a drinker. Had one in the family. Would drink whiskey in am. Then say But I haven't drank in days/weeks! But wud hide it. I don't know why he'd brag about being translated into Polish or Chinese. Poland is very conservative, has an exceptionally large number of Catholics, and they aren't particularly tolerant of LGB, let alone the T. Chinese are going to think he's just another exceptional Western individual as well; you fine people might have heard of this endearing term they've been using since 2010.

I disagree, I don't think Joe is the type of narcissist to resort to direct violence like that, and not the type to ever do something as crude as simple spouse-beating (which is one of the reasons Mallory is in denial about their relationship being unhealthy).

My guess would be more passive-aggressive stuff. Sitting in front of the computer all day huffing and occasionally yelling when he's really angry, demanding large amounts of care and attention to help with all the trauma and transphobia he has faced by arguing on twitter, slamming doors/plates, silent treatment if he's not immediately validated (he can't help acting like this! he's traumatized!), increased sexual demands (but they will not be presented as demands... his needs will have to be coaxed out of him, but still in the end those needs will have to be fulfilled, because nothing else will be able to fix Joe's trauma-based bad mood). The fact that others have to do the work of untangling his needs and figuring out themselves how to correctly appease him is part of the power trip.

I've observed a number of examples of this type of couple, which I think of as "Greater Narc and Lesser Narc".

The male is an obvious malignant narcissist, with very blatant patterns of grandiosity, attention-seeking, dishonesty, exploitative and abusive behavior. They are usually promiscuous, either old-school cheating, or they manipulate their female partner into some sort of polyamorous arrangement which serves the male's needs (but not the female's).

The female can present well in a superficial way. She may be attractive, intelligent, and accomplished. She doesn't display the overt, bizarre, narcissistic patterns of her partner. However, if you know her better, she has what I think of as the more "passive" traits of narcissism - she sees herself as superior to others, she lacks empathy, she lacks ethics. She mainly cares about status and power. She's very judgmental about those who are lower status. This is not to say that she's a covert or vulnerable narcissist. She doesn't have the manipulative, exploitative patterns of that type, nor the victim-playing, the-world-is-against-me mentality. She probably sees herself as a success.

Those who know the couple are aware of the male's narcissistic behavior and may consider him abusive. They may openly wonder why she stays with him.

From what I've seen, these couples have great staying power. The female stays because it serves her more passive narcissistic tendencies. She enjoys the status she thinks she gets from the male. This may be somewhat delusional grandiosity which she shares with the male. The male might not actually be that impressive, but she thinks he is. She may live vicariously through the male's more overt narcissism. She might see his promiscuity as evidence that he's high status and in high demand and that it's a marker of her superiority that she's the one he's publicly committed to.

I think Mallory has an established pattern of being this type of "lesser narc". Her only other known close relationship was with Nicole Cliffe. I know that people tend to give Nicole an easier time, perhaps because she presents in a conventional way, as a traditional housewife, but I think that she's actually at least as twisted as Joe. I think that Cliffe is a dangerous malignant narcissist. Her evidence-free campaigns to destroy Jesse Singal and Jeff Goldblum are more obvious examples of this, but back when she was more active on Twitter, her day-to-day behavior gave off extremely strong Cluster B vibes. I found her very creepy. She set off my "Danger! Danger!" internal alarm.

Anyway, all this is to say, that I don't see Mallory leaving Joe anytime soon.
