Google has updated its algorithms in an effort to promote more racially diverse results in image searches — the tech giant’s latest attempt to excise biases from the world’s most popular search engine.
The recent change, implemented without a formal announcement, is meant to present a variety of skin tones in image queries related to beauty, such as “beautiful skin” and “professional hairstyles”, as well as simpler people-related searches like “woman” or “happy family”, the company said on Tuesday.
“We’ve started to roll out an improvement to Google Images to promote greater skin-tone diversity so more people can find relevant and helpful results,” a Google spokeswoman said in a statement. “We’re in the early phases of this effort and are continuing to experiment to provide greater diversity in results.”
For years, Google has sought to avoid algorithmic racial biases, which have proved embarrassing to the company and offensive to users. In 2015, the tech giant apologised after its photo app misidentified black people as gorillas. Now Google is looking to address subtler signs of bias, including image results that have reinforced European standards of beauty and suggested that black hair is unprofessional.
Google announced a raft of changes to its search engine in September, at an event called Search On, including a feature to add more context to results to help combat misinformation. While the skin-tone update was once slated to be one of the announcements, it was stripped from the agenda. Google said that its racial inclusion efforts were a priority despite not being announced at the event and that it launched more than 4 800 improvements to its search engine in 2020.
The Mountain View, California-based company said it hopes to improve diversity of all people-related search queries but that the process requires many steps and it will launch improvements when they are ready.

They never got to WW2? Dang, in my school days, they always did WW2 every year, but didn't touch on WW1, For some weird reason, only one of my teacher went into it, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Spanish-American War. Though that teacher did something pretty cool when she went into the subject of Vietnam. She invited one speaker who was drafted and the war ruined his life and later another one who had a positive experience and still supports America's involvement in it. She didn't put in her own opinion and let the students come to their own conclusion if the war was the right thing to do or not.I’ve decided that the way history is taught in school DOES need to change.
My kid is now in high school, but the entire time she’s had actual US history or Civics, it’s been almost entirely slavery and Native Americans shit. As if dugout canoes were actually more important than idk, WWII, which they never get to.
So the change that is needed is to World History. We need slavery addressed in every civilization in every century discussed. Who was enslaved? Who enslaved them? What were their living conditions? Was there a way out for them or was it permanent? How are their descendants living today?
This will help balance out the overwhelming focus on slavery in US a history class. We don’t need to conceal anything about slavery in the US. We just need to stop concealing it everywhere else.
What I'm hearing here is that we've gone from a war-focused curriculum to a slavery-focused one. They never got to WW2? I wonder what they might have been planning? Trump supporters that day didn't have a plan, that's for sure. The two sources, both of whom have been granted anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, describe participating in “dozens” of planning briefings ahead of that day when Trump supporters broke into the Capitol as his election loss to President Joe Biden was being certified.
Ray Epps appears to be among the primary orchestrators of the very first breach of the Capitol’s police barricades at 12:50pm on January 6. Epps appears to have led the “breach team” that committed the very first illegal acts on that fateful day. What’s more, Epps and his “breach team” did all their dirty work with 10 minutes still remaining in President Trump’s National Mall speech, and with the vast majority of Trump supporters still 30 minutes away from the Capitol.
