I know 4 trans acquaintances, 2 of which I consider friends, and none of which are particularly fond of activism or using twitter. They might be hurt if someone used the wrong pronouns intentionally to insult them, but they aren't about to blow a gasket and demand the manager if a waiter mistook them for the wrong sex. None of them have any interest in surgery because they know what it entails. They don't really do much to be abnormal, weird, or act like freakshows, they just try to live and understand the fact it's people's choice to respect their decision or not. I don't get it and I think it's weird but they don't bother other people or shove fetish shit in their faces, so I think that's pretty damn acceptable. Don't force fetish shit, don't try and convince kids to be trans, don't be a freakshow, don't catfish, don't bother other people or lose your shit at them for making common mistakes, be a decent human being.
Needless to say, they aren't fond of the image trans people have garnered due to the likes of Rioley, the Tranchers, SJWs...
