Not that I think this is a good idea either, but planes basically fly themselves once you get 50 miles past the airport, especially commercial passenger planes. The entire flight is programmed into the flight computer before you even take off. Even landing is automated: there are two radios with sweeping frequencies placed at the end of the runway the plane "locks on to" and once that's established, the plane keeps a constant speed and will glide to a landing ("establishing the glide path" or "acquiring ILS"). The biggest thing the pilots (there are at least 2; sometimes 3) have to worry about is communicating with Air Traffic Control.

I'm old enough to have experienced being asked by the stewardess if I'd like to come up to the cockpit and check out the plane. One guy was reading a newspaper and the other was showing me all the buttons. That being said, that all changed in 2001 and this chick is lucky an Air Marshal didn't tackle her.
