Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

The Youngkin win honestly seems pretty fucking bad for Republicans in the long term. The main thing the guy seemed to run on was the milquetoast establishment Republican position of "CRT bad". While true, it's a relatively minor issue in comparison to the multitude of more important populist policies that were shown to be of value to Trump Republicans. Youngkin even seemed to make a point of avoiding having a rally with Trump even though the T man likely would have happily done one.

Establishment Republicans are basically treating populist policies and Trump as though they're repellant to voters and a Youngkin win helps confirm in their minds that they're right. When really what helped Youngkin was Democrats fucking up so insanely badly with denouncing parents, defending racism (with CRT and whatever), and doing stupid shit like the Lincoln Project stunt.
I really have to ask the people celebrating here, what did you win? What has the right won?

On the face of it, it appears to be a Dem loss. But really who is Youngkin? He's an unironic multibillion dollar asset manager CEO. This feels like celebrating a Romney 2012 win. Oh ooooo great, you defeated the messiah himself! Now prepare for....the same thing but Mormon?

I really don't see what's to be all hyped about here. A guy got in who might delay some of the worst excesses of the left. Not a guy who is going to rip it out stem and root. A Larry Hogan and not a Ron DeSantis. A not even Greg Abbott. Congrats? Because hedgies and wall street types are well known for their second amendment support, anti-transkids agenda, and small government approaches.

Yall need to take a cold shower and have some perspective. Acting like the globohomo has been dealt some punch to the nose by electing a hedgie and B-B-B-BASED IMMIGRANT. Give me a fucking break lmao.

Not only is this a bloodbath. But dems haven't learn a thing and are continuing to double down
Don't read too much into that. The immediate reaction to a devastating defeat is always very scattered and the ones speaking loudest are always the ones who realize their corner of influence is now on the potential chopping block.

So it's a mixture of people not yet having had time to look inwards, and people eager to make it look like -their- section of it actually helped.

You'll see the more serious takes start appearing about a week after.

Good point. I guess we should wait and see for the upcoming weeks. What the dems real response will be.

NJ is gonna go to Murphy. Already basically tied but two blue counties still have 10% left to report according to politico and 8 days left to shove in as many mail in ballots as they want.

Camden and Essex (Newark) counties are at 88% and 90% respectively on this map. Mercer county (Trenton) at 95%.
Pretty much. Bergen County is usually the best indicator of who's going to win.

Maxine Waters? Really?

Genuine question, but does Waters have a legitimate chance of getting the speaker seat because the woman is a nutjob.

Pelosi might be the most despised politician in america right now, but at least she seems to be living in this reality. Waters and the squad people might be good for twitter politics and for some to feel good about having people "fight for the little guy", even if nobody really wants to see their politics enacted.

When push comes to shove, people will want a Pelosi instead of a Waters, which brings the question, the democrats have no one else?

I find amazing that the democrats just can't get a name out of the ground and are relying on old people at the death's door to keep shit held up, yeah the justice democrats are a pain in the ass for them, but non of the younger generation has any presence for a realistic management of their party?
To answer quick before I head off for the night:

The Democrat succession is basically a popularity contest. Who has to most clout, name recognition, etc. Now, I don't think Water's could get the speakership... but I don't think really -anyone- could. You have three major dem factions in the House and there is nobody they could agree to get behind.

One thing I'd never do is paint MN red. That was the only state that went for Mondale when Reagan swept the 84 elections.
I think the backlash over Floyd and Chauvin is going to be real.
MN is…complicated. The unions up north have been agitated for awhile and Biden torpedoing the economy isn’t going to do the DFL any favors. The metro will remain blue in Hennepin and Ramsey and probably a couple other of the 7 counties, but at least half of the 7 county metro is a toss up now. Especially if Virginia’s suburbanites are any indication of a larger shift in that demographic. Outside of the metro, the state is red like many others. I do not know if the state will flip red, but it will be interesting to watch next year.

Forgot to add Mondale is from MN and is still well regarded in the state, teaches at the University of Minnesota occasionally. That’s the bigger reason he won the state in 84 than anything.

I always suspected they were grooming Hakeem Jeffries for the succession

By promising at nearly every campaign stop to ban critical race theory, an advanced academic concept not taught in Virginia schools, Mr. Youngkin resurrected Republican race-baiting tactics in a state that once served as the capital of the Confederacy.
Amazing that the NYT felt compelled to publish drivel such as this. I bet you they had a few articles about McAuliffe's victory already written up and ready to release.

As opposed to what? Letting McAwful win? Accelerate hard into civil war?

I'm curious as to what people like you wanted. If you wanted a different person on the ballot, you should have started four years ago, when Northam was elected.

My attitude exactly. I'm wrapping up for the night, so I'm just gonna dump my prediction here - If he continues to hold that narrow lead and holds it to the 70% count, I'm calling it for him - No reason they couldn't fortify that margin, but I strongly suspect they wouldn't be prepared to do so if they needed to.
So I went to sleep with the above, and didn't hold much hope past meme magic. But lo and behold....
I figured "Lol ok but it'll collapse later" And continue catching up with the thread, and it just keeps going

NJ Governor election is crazy close with 80% reporting in.
And going - The temptation to start my morning with popcorn has been immense, to say the least
The lead in new Jersey has actually increased...
And then the counting stops, and my sides book a trip with SpaceX to orbit - This is an absolute disaster, and its hilarious.
Can't let that narrow lead remain!

Addendum: This is the -best possible result-. A win in Virginia proving it's a possibility to win, -and a reminder of what they are doing-.
There is going to be an incredible amount of journo salt over the following weeks, but yknow what, I'm doubling down. I don't think they were actually prepared to do any fortification - They know as well as we do that a shutdown is a terrible look, if they had some back pocket fortification ready to go, they wouldn't need to lock down, just fold in.

If we make the assumption that they're struggling to gather the resources to fortify, then they're faced with a decision. Make an expensive, desperate and risky hail mary ballot print, or just bite the bullet, let the dice roll, and establish a counternarrative to "Shutdown = Fraud" if they lose. Not that I expect the dems to accept or understand the concept of a tactical defeat, but its there.

I think the republican is still gonna be in the running right up to second-run hand recounts level of close.

That's an easy one! There's a Dem loss in what should have been a Dem lock state, with record turnout and spending at a dead heat between the Democrat and Republican candidates for governors. Downballot, the Republicans took most of the house while spending less than their competitors in a state that, again, seemed like a lock for the Democrats. Maybe Youngkin isn't the candidate you wanted. But what this (and to a lesser extent for now, NJ) show is that there is a tremendous amount of vulnerability. It shows that the Biden mandate is flimsy, if it still exists at all. It shows that the winds of change are once again blowing, and that they're not at Biden's back.

Yes, there's more work to be done. But this isn't the time to ask for a break from it! This is the time to start looking for the next opportunity and adding to what was gained last night.

So Murphy will win re-election. How did the other New Jersy elections go last night?

Republicans did really well last night

To start, they flipped the House of Delegates and won the three big executives state wide.

In New Jersey, Governor Murphy will most likely squeak by to a narrow victory. The GOP will, hopefully, be kicking themselves that they didn't put more money/time into this race.

Currently, the New Jersey senate is 14D, 12R with 14 seats outstanding. The GOP will likely pick up a handful of seats, bringing them to 17/18. This would leave democrats with a tiny majority in the state senate.

The assembly is currently still outstanding, with 56 seats still undecided.
