That is actually why it happens. They don't understand romantic gestures in the slightest, but they can mimic and they know that a few "grand gestures" work according to movies and the telly.
It's transactional - if they perform action A, outcome B will be the result. But when they're no longer courting and are settled down, there's little to mimic (movies about a normal marriage being few and far between and very fucking gay) and they don't see the need to. Jess McLaughlin is an interesting case. She popped up in one of ZaeLefty's thread insisting that biological sex wasn't binary, and used her PhD as an argument from authority. She blocked those who disagreed with her. Her main beef seems to be with La Scapigliata, a feminist and medical doctor, whom she harasses behind a block (or at least I can suspect as much, Jess never interacted with Scap directly).
There are two interesting things about McLaughlin. Despite her surname, she is not a Gentile. She makes that very clear in the following screenshots.
The second, that she 'just doesn't know' what biological sex is in humans, insists there is no way to prove it, and that it isn't binary, but that a bulk of her work focuses on the genetics of birds - and what sex they are.
She has published 11 papers, all related to gene flow and speciation in birds. That's easy. But for humans like her, she's a she/they who gets offended at the statement that sex is binary.

Forum won't let me quote, but if your stats on 1/3 of people in the middle ages never marrying hold up then being anywhere from low sex drive to sex adverse might just be pretty common. Together with how much porn is readily available, people are pressured by social conventions to announce their sexuality. You're supposed to fit in a box and people seem to consider it normal to have a sex drive always dialed up to 11. Ace can be a way to get away from unwanted pressure and attention. Or in this Tumblr world, a glitter stamp of specialness.
It's definitely something worth study and debating just what's normal variation in sex drive, what's mental health issues/drug side effects, and what's culture.
And drawing porn can be a good revenue stream for people who don't mind drawing it. God only knows how many Patreons exist just for that.
