Here's what pisses me off. This entire video could be boiled down to him looking at the camera and saying "game as shit" and I would still have an equally good understanding of
why this game is shit. If you're going to make a video reviewing a game, especially as a "critic" like Jim, actually explain what is(n't) good about the game. Jim doesn't know what he's doing anymore. I don't mean that in a "he's incompetent" way, because I've read Jim's reviews long before he was making videos and up until the end. No, he
knows how to review a game.
What he doesn't know is if he is trying to inform the viewer and critique the game, or if he is trying to entertain the viewer. There is a gradient between these two points of game reviews, critique and commentary, but he needs to know where he falls on it. He doesn't know anymore. He's just spouting out shit. He doesn't know if he's Skill Up, who gives fairly dry but informative reviews, or if he's Max0r, who "reviews" games by giving you an epileptic seizure leaving you foaming at the mouth as he memes on you for 10-30 minutes while telling you why he does or does not like the game, explaining more than you'd expect about the game itself, and still somehow being more intelligent about it than Jim.
There are people in between these two points as well too, Mandalore is closer to Skill Up, but still entertaining and likes to sneak in discreet jokes and memes (there is a moment in his System Shock 2 review where an enemy says "silence the discord" and the discord message beep plays in a blink and you miss it joke), and is very aware of the memes around him, playing off them such as when he occasionally deadpan references and plays off the associations between him and SsethTzeenach and the meme of them being the same person but on or off of their meds respectively. Speaking of him, there is SsethTzeentach who is mostly memes, but actually leaves you understanding the game he just reviewed and you know whether or not you'd want to play it by the end, though he isn't as meme heavy as Max0r. There are other YouTubers who cover that space between dry yet informative and pure entertainment reviews such as TheRussianBadger, RagnarRox, Shammy, and Raycevick. They are all in different places along the line, all of them have different goals as reviewers and YouTubers, but they all know what they are trying to do. I also can use the tastes of any of them as a barometer to know my opinion of a game, I've figured out what their respective likes and dislikes are and even if I don't agree with their opinions, I know
how I will agree or disagree.
Jim's opinions are non-existent. He says whatever will get the most ass pats. I can't judge if I will or will not like something based on them, nor the footage he uses as he cherry picks his footage and most of it is disconnected and random. I can't tell what the fuck he's aiming for, what his actual thoughts and opinions are, what the
point is beyond a platform for him to bitch about unrelated crap and get views.
Personally I like the entire spectrum of dry to funny review content, so long as the person has opinions to share and a passion for the subject matter or the art form in general, yet Jim doesn't have either.
