Tom thinks being called Sir is akin to slavery because he's never had a real job, so he's never been able to move up to any sort of supervisory/mentor position. @Miss Tommie Jayne Wasserberg most normal people actually see it as a sign of respect for someone to respond with something like "yes sir/ma'am". This just proves that nobody sees you as anything other than a disgusting old man. The only reason she bothered to call you sir is because she's most likely required to.
