A while back Lowtax was ordered to put money in his lawyer's trust account because he'd been intentionally squandering money from the marital estate. There was less than a quarter of the estate left by then.

Lowtax was also held responsible for part of Ashli's legal fees, so it's possible that the maintenance order was a way of balancing out the total amount to which Ashli was entitled because Lowtax had intentionally ensured that he didn't have the funds to pay her out as a lump sum.
