A teenager has been left with horrifying 'childbirth-like' injuries after bike handlebars smashed into her vagina during a cycling crash in Ireland.

The 18-year-old woman, who has not been named, suffered horrific swellings filled with blood and pus-like liquid as a result of the collision.

The teenager had been involved in a collision while riding a bicycle, which resulted in the bike's handle bars colliding directly with her vagina.

Shocking images published in the British Medical Journal show the teenager developed a haematoma, causing the vulva lips to swell and become black with bruising.

There was also a tear in the vaginal tissue which caused the woman to experience bleeding and severe pain.

Doctors from Rotunda Hospital in Dublin said the patient had arrived at the hospital's emergency room with 'severe pain' and an inability to pass urine.

Upon examining her, medics found she had a large swollen vulval haematoma - where a collection of blood pools in the soft tissues of the vagina or vulva as a result of blood vessels breaking, usually due to an injury.

The doctors said the patient had waited three days after the collision to seek medical help.

The authors of the study, Dr Amy Worrall, Dr Eve Gaughan and Michael Geary, said that her injuries were similar to those seen in women after childbirth.

They wrote: 'Vulval injuries of this nature are most often seen postnatally in women following childbirth, in particular following operative vaginal deliveries.

'Other causes include trauma, forceful intercourse, sexual abuse, injection into genital vessels and saddle injuries, as in this case relating to certain sporting activities such as cycling and horse riding.'

The doctors said the swollen tissue around her vagina was bleeding and filled with pus-like fluid.

The teenager was given morphine and paracetamol, as well as a catheter to empty her bladder.

She was then put under anaesthetic and taken to theatre where doctors drained the haematoma. The patient was fully recovered within three months.

Why the fuck did she wait if free healthcare is so great? A smashed in pussy sounds like a pretty big problem.
Considering Ireland's history and still existing reputation in parts for treating women who have sex out of wedlock not terrribly well and said groups who did so still having a big hand in healthcare I'd be a bit nervous about going to Hospital too.

You know what, I'm going to say straight up, I think anybody would be nervous about going to the doctor about their genitals, regardless of cultural background.

It's not. They have to wait on everything.

I didn't look at the picture because I don't like seeing gross injuries, but if it's as bad as people are saying, no doctor would think she got fucked up like that from sex.

Ouch. That looks very nasty. Poor girl.
I’m wondering how this is Ok to report like this though? Reporting with an intimate picture when it’s one patient, and it would be easy to figure out who that patient was, shouldn’t be allowed (unless she gave permission.)
I work with a lot of patient data and this is the kind of data breach that gets legal involved. Unless she consented for this to be released I think it’s awful for them to publish.
Ow. My condolences.

Still don't understand how throwing a kid out the toddler tunnel causes trauma like that. Unfortunate handlebar interactions are different.
It’s basically a rip in the labia/perineum and a huge heamatoma and swelling, so yeah, this can happen but it’s not the typical injury (most are labial tears and grazes.)
Oh unless you’re in Ireland where symphysiotomy with zero anaesthesia was done until very recently.
I suggest kiwis of a more delicate constitution not look up what a symphysiotomy is. But let’s just say that’s how the chainsaw was invented.

This kind of thing is just another bit of none-too-subtle anti-natalism.

Telling women that childbirth is equivalent to a horrifying bicycle injury is a great way to make some of them a bit less likely to want to do it. The generation of women currently bearing kids is the most anxious generation in history already. Adding all these horrifying scenarios to their understanding of the range of possibilities works a little bit at a time, and it works great to make women think childbirth will "ruin" them.

Also makes men think that this is what birth does, and makes men more likely to encourage childlessness in women in order to preserve their sexual function.

I'm trying to imagine how the crash went to make contact in any way to do that and she had to have gone over the bars on a bike on a flat bar bike that had it's bars turned fully to the side. I can't think of any other way to do that, so she had to have hit something fairly tall moving coincidentally at just the right speed to where this was just a total fluke accident because normally you're just going up and over or whipped around and you land on your side.

Poor girl.

My first guess, but even that's a bit off because whenever I've gone over the handlebars it's been up and over like a damn cartoon.

Something like this in the middle of the handlebars could catch I guess.

Bar ends are possible, in that if the handlebar flips to the side there is something to catch which typically points up-ish that would be middle in theory. That said while I was looking up bar ends I saw this:

That looks almost tailor made to catch a low-flying vagina headed over the handlebars...of course it's from Aliexpress.

The third ones are the only ones that seem dangerous to a vagina and then only if world class contortionist talents are involved.

The more I think about things the more I think it's just bicycle-illiterate people being involved. The most likely thing I can think of is she did something that resulted in an endo/stoppie, she slid off the saddle, and hit some combination of the top tube, headset, and/or stem depending on the bike.

Still unlikely, but the fact that it is such a strange, unlikely injury is what got a news article and medical journal paper out of it.

Most of the time when you crash it's the normal, boring broken neck/pelvis/collarbone stuff that anyone can do.

The wording in this article rubs me the wrong way...

She's 18, so yes, technically still a teenager. But any other time someone 18+ is involved (say a criminal for instance), they always use adult terminology. The whole "teenager smashes her twat in a bike wreck, and here's a picture" wording seems a very odd, and very intentional choice. Or as the leftoids would say "That's weird."
