Even if the jury goes to second degree reckless endangering safety, which I think is the least charge that wasn't already dismissed, the minimum sentence with the dangerous weapon modifier is seven years (iirc). At the age of 17, that basically destroys Kyle already.

It's a great thought to put in front of an exhausted jury that's been through two weeks of sperging and drama. "Just agree it was self defense and then you don't need to bother with 37 pages of bullshit, we can all go home and get the turkeys ready." Barnes is a blowhard and an egotist, but he's right that Richards really projects that blue collar gruff dad simplicity that really speaks to a jury.

Seven years and he'd be out in four, so no, it wouldn't destroy him.

I am by NO MEANS minimizing the horrors of such a situation--but it wouldn't have to be life-ending. He could probably make some good money writing (or having ghost written) a book or endorsing ammunition or starting a youtube channel or something. So again, as wretched, unjust, and just plain awful as that would be--i would advise Kyle to hang tough. While four years seems like forever on day one, the day after you out it's (in a way) like it never even happened. He is going to be a hero and a martyr to a lot of people regardless.

And at 22-23-24 years old a man still has his whole life ahead of him.
