This might be a crazy idea, but maybe each juror should have been given their own copy of the instructions in the first place if they're really that important. Were all twelve of them expected to share the same copy of the document? That's kinda rarted.

A lot of governmental entities have opted to "go green" and print stuff as sparingly as possible, no matter how important those documents may be. As an example, my state used to send businesses tax booklets with enough forms for those that needed to pay state taxes on a monthly basis. Over time, the booklet only had one such blank form with instructions to make as many copies as needed. Now, those booklets don't get printed and sent at all; people are directed to the treasury web site to download forms or encouraged to file online.

So, it wouldn't surprise me if one copy of the instructions was printed as a cost-saving measure. However, it would probably have been better to give each juror a full copy of instructions from the start given the seriousness of the case and the fact the instructions are complex enough to span 30-plus pages.

While I won't speculate on what the jury might be thinking, nor will I put too much stock in the rumor there's two holdouts, I'd like to think the jury wanted instructions for everyone so that any verdict that gets reached is consistent with the instructions -- just like the judge did what he could to ensure a fair trial on his end.
