Straight when it comes to sexuality. Originally it was a word the gay community used to insult non-fags, why we started using it to describe ourselves is beyond me.

This isn't a term, it's more of a language trope. It's when a narrator or talking head pronounces a non-English name with an exaggerated accent. This means you can't really hear the damn name if you're a native English speaker. For example:
"...to discuss this trend we've brought in Ðáôçóåijtās Rømrâtæn, a Professor of Lolcows at Fuckingham University..."
I've noticed it's almost always a Spanish name, they usually don't even try with, say, an Arab or Asian one. When they do they just apply a generic foreign accent. I guess it's supposed to be "PC" somehow, but all it does is distract the mind and rape the ear.

Nerd culture isn't "pop culture". You know what pop culture was? Pop culture was autotuned pop songs, boy bands, Christina Aguillera, Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Fast And The Furious, all of that shit that you'd see pushed out in Hollywood pre 2010s. All of that was fucking pop culture.
Nowadays, "pop culture" is as appropriating and whitewashing as "no loser child sportsmanship" and "PC Subtitute Sub-off-vanilla Christmas replacement", or replacing shell shock with "post traumatic stress disorder". The only reason why nerds are okay with having their hobbies be placed under "popular culture" is because it's egotistic hobby dickjerking amongst the more fucking shit of the subculture population who need wedgies and being told in the face in real life that they are the fucking loser from the "hide the sun" meme and because corporations and the media have appropriated and homogenized it because no one wants their manufactured formulaic shit anymore.
You want something to blame for why there's consuum fags? Labeling shit pop culture. Cosplay thots, camwhore streamerthots, and uninterested whores in a self insular spectator hobby? Labeling shit pop culture. Shit ass Funko Pops? Labeling shit pop culture. Hipsterfags breaking into your hobby? Labeling shit pop culture. Fucking septic tank levels of bitter nerd losers who run shitty websites and podcasts hoping to get clicks for their hot takes hoping to be the "true voice of the fandom" and get the attention that mommy, daddy, and their high school never gave them? Fucking labeling shit pop culture.
Nerd shit was never popular. Those who try to make it "pop culture" should be fucking lynched and have their corpse be fucking food for the scavengers.

Anything like games, comics etc ARE pop culture. This is how it works. The fact it is obscure or such does not make it anything else automatically.
I had a guy screech at me for referring to Mass Effect as pop-culture. He also wanted to bomb Korea for eating dogs and thought women do not watch porn.
I get it feels unpleasant, but pop-culture is what this IS. It is only not pop if only author shows interest in it, but the second it got a few fans, it is pop-culture.
