The prosecution would never bring in character evidence unless they were positive that the Defense would sleep on it and not provide rebuttal evidence. That's why they tried to just call Skater Boi a hero and degraded the Manlet for being a Manlet that Kyle should have taunted by asking about his pot of gold while holding him at arms length.

They avoided character evidence because the evidence shows that both of them were violent assholes who liked to start shit.

I'd argue no. The Prosecution was clearly trying to get a mistrial early on when all their witnesses tanked. It is only once that failed that they played their last trump card with the provocation argument. Had they got the mistrial earlier, they'd have retained it for round 2.
