So I've been mulling this over and I -in spite of all we've seen and heard from this group of miscreants - find myself genuinely horrified at the story of Chantal and Peetz's relationship. About Cornwall... it genuinely is a joke in this province, especially this part of it, that Cornwall is white trash heaven. To be fair, people tend to run with that with no knowledge of that small city. If you want to call it such, 'trashy Cornwall' was a pre-internet meme.
It's always had a solid job base & currently enjoys a solid & well mixed economic base with decent pay; you can prosper in Cornwall with a bit of long term planning.
In truth, it probably does NOT have a higher percentage of trashy folk than a comparable or any city in the province & I've never been able to pin down how it obtained its repuation.
If your only exposure to people from Cornwall are the Sarault clan, Shannon & her ilk; you can be forgiven for thinking the place is to be avoided like the plague... LOL. The small amount of time I've spent there I've found it a pleasant enough place with a fair bit to offer unless you're hooked on the big city 'culture vulture' scene & if you happen to be, it's not far from Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto.
But I've always low key hoped someone with a far more comprehensive knowledge of the place could explain why it has such an odd reputation, exemplified by Chantal & Shonnon.

I've struggled for a while to think of an American analogue for Cornwall, to put it in perspective for people.
Is it like a trashy midwest town? Yes, I'd say this is the predominant characteristic. But it's also just down the highway from the Canadian equivalents of Washington DC, NYC, and New Orleans. So I think a lot of the more ambitious and/or educated types have historically had a lot of convenient "escape routes" that someone in, like, Norman, Oklahoma wouldn't. And at the same time, the harder-working and more sensible blue-collar people historically had a lot of other blue-collar towns in the general region to move to, many with more lucrative industry.
I'm not saying that only the absolute dregs stay in Cornwall, reproduce, and create more dregs. But I could see how that kind of reputation could arise over time, given these factors. If people perceive all the white collars easily fleeing and the best of the blue collars being savvy enough to look elsewhere, it doesn't really matter if a place is reasonably decent. Its reputation tanks.
Edit: Upon further investigation, it's not really fair to compare Cornwall to Norman, OK. Norman is over twice the size of Cornwall.
I dunno. Manufacturing jobs are dead or dying, most people are fleeing to the cities, and Cornwall is probably just the first of many dominoes that will fall in small-town Ontario. They'll all be ghost towns of meth and poverty in a decade or so. Shannon is merely a harbinger of things to come.

The town probably got its rep when blue collar work was commonplace in Canada. Tons of small towns have the same kind of history, and it's probably because in the 60s to 80s blue collar people actually existed and had livelihoods before everything got packed up and sold to China. Lots of salt of the earth hard drinking people in one place back then.
