The people like Calli, Kiara, Nene, Noel and Summer Festival are the minority in this case and therefore the 'exception'. Most idols deal with exactly what Gura deals with, if not worse.

I guess it might be that hearing Selen read off a totally safe script is firing off the "wait what the fuck, something's wrong" synapse, like the Capgras syndrome or something.

Even the livers treat it as such, Selen has on multiple occasions talked about it being viewed by them as more of a punishment game than anything else due to how cringe it is. Plus, if you wants to go into VA than idk if she has much of a choice, she might literally have to have a promotional facedoxx photo. Brand is hugely important. Does anyone seriously think that Selen would be approaching 200k subs if she was still an indie? She was getting sub-100 view counts doing the same kinds of streams back then as she does now for Nijisanji. Or would Hakos be 364k if she was still in MyHolo instead of Hololive? I severely doubt it.

Sony's problem is that Sony has little brand recognition as a vtuber agency. They have a lot of brand recognition in general, but mostly for other things. If those same names and designs were debuting as a part of Hololive or Nijisanji or even VSPO they'd be bigger not due to design or personality but simply due to the agency name attached to them. Sony is not "known" for vtubers. They do have a long-standing deal with Tsukino Mito, and have dabbled in trying their own vtuber-like projects before, but that's about it.

Sony also has done a poor job of marketing VERSE (the new group). They put a ton of effort into the PV but the VERSE channel doesn't even link the members in the channels section of the YT page. That is a small thing, but it's something that is very easy to do, and any agency should do. They basically just dropped a PV and announced debuts but did little else to market them. Admittedly it is kind of hard to market vtubers if you aren't established in the vtuber business in the first place, which leads back to my first point - Sony isn't known as being a vtuber agency. Sony's significant reach in the anime, gaming, and music spheres would give them an edge in marketing their vtubers, but they haven't really done it with VERSE yet outside of that shiny PV.

I don't really think it matters if it was VA or Senzawa, this kind of thing isn't restricted to the most recent identity, there are a lot of other dox that link a variety of accounts back to the idol.

You mentioned "the hags", which is the most interesting to me. I assume that involves Botan and some others.

Well my thought process was along the lines of:
- Gura has about 3 face pictures leaked, where most of her face is shown. Edit: Of which the validity of two of them is questionable.
- Some of the 'hags' have been around a lot longer than Gura
- Using Marine as an example, she has 6-7 face pics that float around, a few of them have filters/stickers obscuring things
- Given the time Marine has been active online the amount of face pics that have leaked are roughly proportional to Gura
- Other hags follow this trend though some have video of them
- I'm using the nip dox site as the basis for this, so there could be stuff I am not accounting for.

Anyway, my point is that Gura's dox isn't special or bad by any metric. If I had to pick an EN girl who was the hardest done by I'd pick Ina, to my knowledge her facedox was based on posts by her family members and not by her own posts.

i think it's kinda worth noting at this point that it was not sena howard who'd posted her own pic, it was her game company, there's a difference. i can't seem to find the company page anymore but it did exist prior to people actually finding the pic there, but alas, i don't want to carry this on longer than it should. i think some of you guys got things mixed up at some point and i had to clarify, not that it matters much.

also looking through the lolcow threads to see if i remembered shit wrong, this made me laugh

We can say that with our perspective, but from a Japanese perspective actually giving a shit about this is probably a big deal. Japan has some weird anomalies, like how it's considered high-tech despite living on fax machines and the worst websites imaginable by a human being, on top of companies' tech retardation like Johnny's (same agency that was gonna shut down Sega's Judgment series for considering a PC port) ban on posting their talents' images online. Considering that bullying culture is infamous in there like with, again, Hana Kimura being cyberbullied into killing herself, their society is probably pretty stunted in that regard too.
