The core thing the Republican party has had to do for a while but just wasn't under defacto Democrat rule was to sit down and determine -what- they would be conserving. If you attempt to conserve everything, you stagnate and are unable to push forward your own ideals.
To fill in some gaps in your knowledge. The promise both Trump and McDaniel have provided is not some sort of wholehearted push to make Gays be everywhere. Rather, its an affirmation of a stance that was asked for by most of the LGBT community and which has been utterly forgotten by the Democrats.

That's it, that's the thrust of the outreach. Oh yes, dressed up in fancy words about support and LGBT rights, etc. But when it comes time to propose policy to them, that is the policy proposed. That we acknowledge them, not persecute them, not seek to ostracise them... so long as they do the same and don't push their shit onto others. A mutual agreement to look past the issues and work together on anything else more important.
