I think the original bail was $10,000, then reduced because the public defender argued that would be impossible for him to raise, so they then reduced it to $7,500, which he couldn’t make either but theoretically could have by selling basically all his shit. Then he was in prison awaiting trial for 8 months so the defender argued his 6th amendment rights to a speedy trial was being violated. The judge agreed and reduced the bail. Prosecutor objected but didn’t press the point too hard.

The public defender is doing his job. Like, half the point of being a public defender is that even the worst scum have a constitutional right to a lawyer that will at least try and help them. It’s a hard job and a pretty thankless one. The biggest error here was in the 1k bail. Being held for 8 months without being charged for a crime is starting to risk 6th amendment violations, especially since it isn’t a high stake crime. Judge is ultimately responsible for deciding “yeah sure $500 is reasonable for a guy with no work and who owns basically nothing who hasn’t skipped bail before.”

He had skipped bail before in NV, but I doubt anyone in that courtroom but him knew that.
