Because of Covid I am hosting a small Thanksgiving Dinner for my parents and little ones. I did this last year too. It’s a lot of work and I’ve had a sinus infection for a week so I’d be a puddle at this point without all the help from my amazing husband.

The last years have made me greatly appreciate how much fucking working putting on a big spread for lots of people is (and I’m only doing 1/5 of the food that was typical for big family dinners in my past). I never appreciated how much work the army of women put in to make such giant feasts for everyone. Now I truly miss the enormous, noisy, 40 plus people Thanksgiving Dinners of my childhood which ofc I never appreciated until they were gone.

dutchmen don't know how delicious it is to pour gravy down your facehole while Uncle Ted talks about politics and jesus and the nazis

My grandparents were poor and lived in a trailer. My grandmother as a result made almost everything from scratch including her bread for stuffing, sticky buns and dinner rolls. As a teen I thought it was sad because she couldn't afford anything better. My grandfather flew in WWII and grew up in the Midwest. He was casually racist and would get us in trouble by calling things racist nicknames like when he'd call sunflowers "Niggerheads". He also did this hilarious thing where he'd point with his middle finger. I miss them a lot and didn't realize how great they were until they passed away.
My grandparents were a mixed bag. A couple of them were pretty cool to me and the rest were pretty much assholes and/or folks I never really knew.

I miss the ones who were cool every now and then but then I just tell myself that they wouldn’t want to be around for this “current year” bullshit anyway. Besides, they were kinda cool but also were pretty fucked up in their own ways so if they were still around I’d be having to deal with their bullshit like blowing all their SS check for the month on lottery tickets or trying to walk onto White Sands Missile Base because there’s Spanish gold hidden in some abandoned mine or some other such bullshit. Ashes to ashes.

It wasn’t always that way in the US. There was a time way back when it was considered tres gauche to bring up politics or religion in social settings. I don’t know when it changed for the rest of the country but in my little part of it “No Politics&No Religion” was a barroom rule even as recently as the late 2Ks. These days, of course, it’s inescapable. Happy fucking Holidays.

I mean, it still is in a lotta families in this country. Though from what I hear online it sounds like there are more people than ever who have family members that are inappropriate at gatherings. I guess it's a combination of autism, social misfits in the family, and leftover TDS that fermented on social media and carried over to real life.

I feel sorry for those who have to deal with that. You get enough of that online and on TV, you don't need to hear that shit at parties too. That's so lame. Adults and even brainwashed teenagers have the self control to shut their mouths and keep their controversial opinions to themselves for a few hours.

My entire family is of one mind on all those kinds of controversial topics and politics that the media likes to push to divide communities, and even we don't talk about this kind of stuff at get together's, cuz it's depressing.

And I have a gigantic family with a lot of kids, and it really wouldn't be in good taste to shout nigger that much in front of the kids. They'll learn the truth when they're a little older.

I don’t know what country you’re talking about but if you’re saying that from anywhere in the US you should consider yourself damn lucky and enjoy it while it lasts. Hell, no matter where you are, consider yourself damn lucky.

There's no such thing in my family, at least not for & from me.

That just makes it ever better. We had all that shit for less than a quarter of the time you guys had it, and we still did more with it.

Seethe harder, Europoor.
are you dense or something, if you didn't had that shit you would have had to invent it. You being descendants of Europeans only served to help you develop.
