Luna exists with no sentience. She has no organized brain tissue capable of putting together the synapses needed to foster actual thought. The only thing she's got going for her is her brain stem, which manages the basic functions of human life (respiration, heartbeat, etc). EKG studies show that her brain activity is well outside the realm of normal all the time. There is nothing going on upstairs -- and if it is, it's in flits of electricity that go nowhere in particular. Luna may perceive sounds through her inner ear (though the outer ear is deformed), but she lacks a functioning temporal lobe, which is required to interpret the sound into something meaningful. So if Luna hears anything, it's like a hiker screaming in the middle of Tongas National Forest. In Alaska. Where literally no one can hear it.I’ve noticed lately that Luna’s eye seems to turn toward loud noises (sometimes), so I’m wondering if she actually is completely deaf.
Of course, her brain is, so she doesn’t interpret what those noises are, (happy or sad,, human or not). Maybe the fact that her inner ear works does something? She doesn’t know she’s a human and has existence. It just seems to me she occasionally hears what’s going on and turns to the noise. (I also know it could be random and that’s what Robyn is showing, it’s new to me to notice). It’s a change for me since I thought she was a lump of clay and still think she is but sometimes I see a reaction. (Only hearing, not sight)
But it’s made me imagine what could be going on inside if she does hear once in a while and it’s not my imagination. If she had one sense, however dull, but no way of putting that in any perspective or context, what can it be like for her? I still think she’s blind, and has almost no brain, maybe no feeling of touch, and is always seizing, so what goes on in her head? Why would she even look? If she hears a sound, what is it to her? Mom can tell her she’s doing right forever, but she can’t know that. Is it like sleep, with a noise? Is it just death but you can’t get there fully? Does the few cells she has in her destroyed brain ever connect?
She’s not really a human but just sort of human shaped. But we can’t even know that without knowing what’s inside. Weird.
Something must be in my pre-Thanksgiving wine I was not aware of. Sorry. Puzzle pieces accepted.
As far as Luna's day-to-day experience, I imagine it as the period between awake and asleep that's demarcated by nothing. Maybe the equivalent of anesthesia, where you're on the table one moment and wake up in recovery, but cannot account for the time in-between. Luna is in that in-between all the time. Luna had a sleep study, and I'm not sure what the results are, but I don't imagine she's capable of sleep cycles. Luna likely doesn't dream. She simply exists. There is no concept of time or existence. She just is.
