I've never understood the left's fascination with Islam. They are the most anti-liberal group of people on this planet. They treat women as sex slaves, they still practice slavery, they are compelled by Sharia to kill atheists, Jews, gays, and anyone who isn't Muslim, they are xenophobic as shit, and they are famously against freedom of expression. I get that they are "Brown" and not Christian, and that Marxism exists, but how can they consciously support them?

The left never really liked Islam for itself but they are stuck with it because fuck Bush. 9/11 and the following wars in Middle East got alot of people to notice Islam and muslims in a new way and that got them connected with the left. Bush was really really unpopular president for the leftist of the time, he was seen as the everything wrong with America. The vitriol was intense but he still managed to get two terms and this was mostly blaimed on war on terror being popular and fundamentalist white judgy christians. So anything that was opposite of that was instead seen as good and righteous. Islam definitely fits and the religion has nice exotic feel that allows easier glossing over the bad parts. It also helps that muslim women stand out more than the men because people see women as less dangerous and more deserving of help.
That applies to literally every republican president ever since Lincoln took away their slaves.

Exactly. Having once been afflicted with white guilt myself, I know this all too well. It has nothing to do with forgiveness. It has nothing to do with progress or justice either.
