XenForo has revoked our license

Rust would probably be a lot harder to DDoS on a request basis, if written well, due to less CPU load and lower latency. They could still DDoS on bandwidth, though. I've wondered for a while if only announcing IPv6 subnets would help on that front, with IPv4 only clients being able to connect through Cloudflare.

Unless he's encoding video or something, language choice isn't likely to be a bottleneck, even for a DDOS attack. Most of your latency in a web app is driven by I/O, and DDOS mitigation should be handled around the load balancer layer. Rust is definitely overkill for the forum's backend, but if he's interested enough to actually stick with it, that's probably the most important thing.

I have always found it odd that companies like XenForo would kowtow to individuals that do not contribute any monetary value to them. Let’s say that Null loves Frosted Flakes. Will enough emails to Kellogg’s make it so that Null’s permissions to buy and consume their products is revoked? Jokes on them, he has one of those absurdly large CostCo Mexican family sized boxes in the pantry. Seriously, no one knows about or cares what XenForo is. It’s not like the software is an …. As a Service, so, this really did fuck all except make it impossible to apply the already shitty XenForo updates pushes out (and they do not act quickly on egregious 0days).

Fuck this software, lol

I still find it so bizarre, that you can purchase something; use it just fine, and then have an insane faggot scream about you, and so the guy you brought shit from revokes your power to use what you paid for.

Imagine if IRL transactions worked this way, you go to buy some chicken from a butcher, and an insane pedo runs in after you and starts screeching like a retard. The Butcher shrugs goes, 'Sorry Null mate, can't have you corrupting the image of my chicken'. So you don't get any. Shit's peak clownworld.

Hopefully this gets fixed

"XenForo's issues drove me to start working on forum software made in Rust very recently, coincidentally."

So, there is potential that eventually you will end up with your own forum software, written in a proper language like Rust and scalable to easily handle the large kind of sites where Xeno struggles?
That sounds like a good opportunity to eventually sell a competing, but better, product to Xeno.
I hope this will turn out for the best, for KF as well as for yourself personally.

It kind of reminds me of the setback when MarkWaid tried to destroy Zac's ability to get his silly book published. And the end result a few year later being that Zac now owns a small but very profitable publishing company and has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.
I hope this turns out the same way.

Classic forums are dying. There is a shrinking pool of customers.
XenForo just signaled to future and current customers that if they don't like your politics then they will pull your license.

It sounds like keeping this software running is a pain but from an end user prospective if the site never gets an update who cares. Kiwifarms is the most polished looking and most feature rich forum I have ever seen. :semperfidelis:

KiwiFarms’ XenForo License Revoked

Posted on December 1, 2021 by Samuel Collingwood Smith
After recent correspondence with UK firm XenForo Limited, MHN can exclusively reveal that Kiwi Farms’ commercial XenForo license has been revoked. The notorious, terrorist, stalking forum run by monster Joshua Conner Moon, who admitted to watching Neko Shota (cartoon child porn featuring boys) and hosting stories on another site about pre-teens being raped to death, has been a source of controversy for years. Now, XenForo has revoked Kiwi Farms’ commercial license.
XenForo is popular forum software known for allowing users to congratulate each other for posts with a large number of whimsical stickers. For years, it has powered the KiwiFarmers’ ability to clap each other on their virtual backs as they abused the disabled, cheered on mass shooters and shared sickening sexual depravity. It is certain that XenForo were unaware of this as their software license clearly prohibits illegal and discriminatory activities. Now, XenForo has become the latest firm to confirm their business is not wanted – following in the footsteps of MasterCard, VISA, um … Hatreon, Gandi.net and a wide variety of hosting companies.
After seeing leaked posts by Moon that he feared losing the license and was contemplating writing an alternative platform, MHN contacted XenForo and asked them about the situation. They replied as follows –
XenForo confirm the Kiwi Farms commercial XenForo license has been revoked.
Your author accepts this statement. PHP based software is relatively easy to pirate. However, the loss of the license makes it harder to move the forum or obtain upgrades and plugins. This is important as it makes the site considerably more vulnerable to attack. The sequence of events is unclear – as to whether my inquiry provoked the revocation or Moon posted because it had already happened. If, as the email implies, it was revoked before my inquiry then perhaps that motivated Moon’s posts about creating an alternative. He has good reason to be less than forthcoming with his users because anything which worsens security is likely to concern them and make them consider rival sites.
Kiwi Farms has faced many attacks in recent years, ranging from brute force DDOS attacks to sophisticated attempts to harvest user data by cache manipulation. Users of the vile site face personal ruin if their identities are revealed and this event can only make things riskier for them.

The E-mail from Xenforo. I wonder what he sent in that letter, might be worth asking Xenforo what he sent for..."litigation purposes".

Why specifically Rust? It's a great language, and very powerful, but it seems like overkill for this kind of thing. Not to mention the extremely limited developer pool could make it hard to find devs. C++ might net better results because of how ubiquitous it is while still being more than fast enough to write forum software with. You could probably get away with C# too.

Really as long as it's not PHP it'll be an improvement. You could probably make a webserver in Visual Basic and it'd suck less.
Rust is all about memory safety. A lot of security-related bugs - very important for web development - stem from C/C++ not being very rigid about memory access. If you mess up in C/C++, you can access or overwrite sections of memory that you didn't want to.
Rust wants to make that impossible. Except that Rust supports "unsafe" sections where this stuff is allowed after all.

And now we get a gay little watermark that pops up now and then like we're running pirated software or something. Fuck XenForo, they have only hurt themselves by caving in to Vordrak of all fucking people.

I thought he had found new people to project his pedophelia fetish onto by now.
I just have the page at 80%. I don't really notice it on the side of the screen in the background images. It's a lot more noticeable at 110%
