The writing has been on the wall ever since they shot down student debt relief. With that being such a core demographic issue it was inevitable that they'd see losses. Everything since has only compounded the issue.

Removing the core issue for a group from the board then adding economic worries on top of a core issue that itself was economic is just terrible.

They certainly don't look good. The 2013 shutdown looked bad for Republicans and in fact the Republicans didn't gain any significant win from doing it. Similarly, a November 1995 poll during the shutdowns Bill Clinton experienced laid a bunch more blame on the Republicans in Congress than on Clinton.

Government shutdowns are something that on paper looks like it should be good to rally one's base, but in practice are basically a mutual suicide pact.

GOP driven government shutdowns did hurt the GOP big time during the Clinton and Obama years. Newt completely fucked up the shutdown optics (making it seem like he shut down the government because Clinton wouldn't give him a decent seat on Air Force One) in 1995 and allowed Clinton and the media to paint the GOP as petty shits. Bob Dole in particular, NEVER forgave Newt Gingrich for the shutdown. Dole believes the GOP had a decent shot to beat Bill in 1996 after the trouncing Democrats received losing control over both branches of Congress. But then Newt came along and shut down the government over petty seating arrangement issues and the public turned back to the Democrats as "the adults in the room.

Similarly, the shutdown during the Obama administration had even WORSE optics as the GOP didn't even hide the fact that they were doing it for spite and malice to punish people for the sin of voting in Obama. If you want to know WHY Ted Cruz is such a bette noir for the left and why moderates and undecided folk actively CHEERED Donald Trump buck breaking Cruz to his will? The shutdown is why.

Government shutdowns are like invading Russia in the winter. You never fucking do it if you are a conservative minded person.

The shutdowns during the Clinton and Obama years did not hurt the Republicans in the long term. With 1995, sure Clinton won re-election but that was always an uphill battle with his improved popularity and a good economy. But that didn't mean Congressional Republicans where punished either, they still controlled Congress with little to no losses. With 2013 one can argue that it helped the GOP since they eventually controlled both houses of Congress in their best showing in decades. Overall government shutdowns only affect government workers and welfare recipients who are biased for the dems anyway and whatever temporary hit in popularity never panned out electorally.

Why would he? Trump won. He’s probably waiting for an inevitable TYT meltdown or Mundane Matt drama or something similar. I think he mentioned making fun of the right if Trump lost but the actual outcome was hazy and not reminiscent of a true meltdown that there wasn’t good material to mock the right for.
