The matter is still up in the air. Putin has been loudly and clearly calling for diplimatic talks over the last several weeks, asking for a binding document that would guarantee the non-proliferation of NATO into Ukraine, unlike shit verbal promises given to that buffoon Gorbachev. He also informed everybody concerned that if Ukraine joins, there will be nukes going into Kaliningrad (aka Konigsberg, that European enclave of ours) as a symmetric response.

America has been surprisingly receptive with Biden administration willing to act as the mediator and wrangle the rest of the NATO gaggle and even Ukraine's president Zelensky admitted that Donbass and Crimea referendums are on the table (though it is hard to say if he actually means it).

You don't have to be a boomer to see moral decay and degradation of trust and community cohesion, and you could be blind and still see the political polarization clearly from orbit. I'm most certainly not saying things were just peachy in the past, far from it, social problems abounded, and the solutions of the day were to hide and ignore them (which has obviously worked out well for us here in the present eh?), but we've become a low-trust society. There will be pockets of cohesion, in areas where the rot hasn't been too bad, and you will still see communties lending support to eachother during crisis, but I think its a bit naive to think that everyone will just come together for the right casus belli. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear I'm right.

I think you miss my point, which is that the idea that everyone selflessly "came together" to defeat naziism is hollywood fantasy.

Of course, my original point was that twenty years isn't all that long, and that certainly there was no sort of mass self-sacrifice after 9/11. Indeed, that played out extremely similar to covid, where early "we're all in this together" feel-good twaddle and joyful applause of massive government intervention gave way to empathy fatigue and buyer's remorse.
