Define "tangentially." Frankly I don't think I'm incorrect in saying the closest thing most of us have with the speedrunning community is pointing and laughing at them. With a gun to my head I wouldn't watch any speedrunning event, attend any con virtually or in person, or, for that matter, even make a twitch account. It's not that you're hitting a nerve, it's that we've (patiently) told you multiple times that everyone - yes, everyone - does and says dumb shit when they're in their formative teen years. We befriend the wrong people, we fall for manipulation schemes, we give people second, third, fourth chances when they really didn't deserve the first. We learned to recognize it and call it out. I can't speak to FanaticDreamer's character but it seems like it was a learning experience marked by sheer apathy toward the end. This person has clearly been done with Chibi's shit for a while now. I'm not religious, even in the slightest, but all his mom is trying to find something that will help her son not be a total embarrassment, and I firmly believe that this is the real reason that Chibi wants her out of his life. He ignores her all the same when she brings up suggestions that are not religion-based, as evidenced in the recent slew of Facebook activity. There are many circumstances where they can remain on (disabled, mental illness, etc.).
The bar is pretty high to get an exemption, and Chibi doesn't seem like he would have any diagnosis that would fall under it.

It's so easy to respect your parents' religion and not practice/believe in your own home/time. You don't have to believe/practice to respect that they do. Going to a 1 hour service when you visit or on a holiday isn't going to make you burst into flame.

On the note of the creeping on 14-15 year olds while 18 and older, this is, very sadly, very common for autists. Because their interests usually stay more childish, they find they can relate more to younger people. Most times you get that weird, but harmless guy at the game shop who'll talk to you for a few hours about Pokemon. Most parents are cool with this and at that point, most autists are aware that they're older and will reassure the parents that they just like to talk about whatever interest. It's good for the autist to get some human interaction and good for the kids to prepare for encountering the mentally disabled in life so they can learn a little patience and compassion.

Then you get the cases like Chibi. They get a taste of that "cool" they never had with their age group. Because they can probably drive and have access to the kind of money a 14-15 year old doesn't, even with a part time job. It's a classic grooming situation. The kid feels grown up and mature, and the predator gets his rocks off in all ways. And no, they don't "not know better"- they all know exactly what they're doing.
