I'm not so sure that's it, I think it's more an extension of his need to express that he's better than you. Only Phil would be THAT ignorant, because only he is THAT unwilling to broaden his horizons enough to be aware that when you want a reliable luxury vehicle, you don't get a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz, You get a Lexus or an Infiniti. Anyone who does a modicum of research, or even just talks to enough people, knows that.

This is why I love it when Phil doesn't hold back on talking about his life, I love it when he unintentionally shows off the limits of his knowledge and experience being frighteningly below what it should be by his age.
