I'm not so sure he's believing it so much as unintentionally displaying that he even though he doesn't face it fully, he IS sweating. He would have to be to get excited about "growth" that he knows isn't happening. Young Phil would laugh at the idea of even noticing ONE person, who is a long-time follower, getting his stream rec'd to them. You know you've fallen hard when you're Phil and younger self had more confidence.

Which is also why Skyrim playthrough will suffer. Or any of his playthroughs will suffer. He wants his cake and eat it to with his situation now.

A big part of the problem is that Phil is scared. Not as much as he should be, and not OF what he should be, but he is scared, and his first and only instinct is to run to a place of comfort. That's why he's straight up telling people exactly what we expect him to: that they should give him money without expecting anything in return, so he can keep getting everything he wants and nothing he doesn't.

That's what Phil is afraid of losing, a lack of sacrifices he has to make to get by, and so it's going to get really entertaining when he finds out that that's the least of his worries.

Phil's never been much of a gamer, that's pretty obvious. He's said in the past that he doesn't understand why streaming is popular, which is common for our Gen X/Millennial generation. He doesn't have passion or care for any of this. Phil lucked into all of this with spamming fighting game videos online and winning the algorithm.

Also, Phil really has the mindset that adults clock in/clock out at work, and if you do that, you deserve a wonderful life with family and lots of money. Again, common belief with our generation.

In conclusion, I think Phil believes all the shit he says but it's because he has no care or passion or interest in what he's doing. He shows up for "work", makes his money, and that's that.

Phil does not care anymore. He has lost the capacity to care about the begging narrative. He is banking on the notion that his wheelchairs will turn their nose up to any piece of hard evidence detailing anything he's said in the past (which, for the most part, has been the case for months now), so he doesn't care about lying effectively anymore. The narrative changes every single day, retcons happening at a breakneck pace, and pigroach simply cannot care about how shoddy the grift is anymore, because the whales aren't going anywhere, no matter how many lies and contradictions add up every prestream.
