Lindsay Ellis has left the chat. New member Carole Hansen joins lol.
I'm genuinely curious to learn more about the behind the scenes fallout of this shitshow. Not so much the what, it was inevitable that Lindsay burnt out, but the timing of it. Jumping back on Twitter after months away and publicly declaring it was strictly for business only to cry loudly in public, followed by telling Tom Scott to take down his video is...weird. Her specifically mentioning in her tweet to Scott that to feature Jill Bearup was as validating as Standard (the agent/management arm of Nebula) onboarding her as a client is important and deserves more scrutiny IMO. A lot of this has already been mentioned in the thread but I want to collate it in a single post.
Thanks to other Kiwis for noting that Jill Bearup was an old friend of Lindsay's, part of Chez Apocalypse and Channel Awesome 2014-2018 as
Sursum Ursa with her show Stuff You Like. Bearup became persona non grata to the wokies in 2017 after a blog post (
archive here) in which she was opposed to trannies attacking a 60yo woman at Speakers Corner (it's a British thing, basically a public square) and was opposed to general troon tyranny at the expense of women. A snippet:
How terrible, burn the terf.
She was hastily unpersoned by the Chez clique yet remained with CA until
leaving amidst the #CTC drama. At some point (hard to find details) she was managed by Standard and her content was on
Nebula until she resigned from Standard due to troon tears over her recent fight scene video with Tom Scott. It's so recent that as I type she still lists
jillbearup@standard.tv as her business email. Scott released a
statement on December 27th 2021 about why he would work with a problematic like Bearup (she's good at what she does? idk). And Lindsay just had to involve herself.
Keep in mind that Lindsay has been part of Nebula since its inception and went public with being managed by Dave Wiskus, CEO of Standard and Nebula, after the Twitter Controversy. So she responded to Tom Scott posting about his new video with this pompous moralizing:
No one tagged Lindsay in to the convo, she chose to jump in the fray and wokescold Tom Scott for...what? Why did she start spontaneously lecturing a fellow content producer, virtue signaling what a savior of the trannies she is and talking shit about her management team? Then not 24 hours after this sideways cancel-y pile-on instigation, she dramatically releases her own Goodbye, Internet screed. It's a mess of idpol buzzwords where she drags in trans issues repeatedly, blames ciswhiteheteronormativeMEN for all the bad the wokies have made her feel and specifically mentions that while she was going to just make content for Nebula in the future, she's not even going to do that.
My initial plan was to leave YouTube for Nebula, but I realize now that this is only entrenching myself in a more intimate form of harm rather than the broad, buckshot kind that YouTube invites. I won’t go into detail (not right now, anyway), but I can’t do video content for them either.
Always a victim, is Ms. Ellis. There are no safe spaces for woman creators on the Internet! But vagueposting like this is unnecessary and hints of behind the scenes drama, possibly instigated by her just like at every other business she's been a part of. She is too pure a progressive, creative force to be subjected to the cruel machinations of a company like Nebula lol. If not for the last line there, it could be simply passed off as a continuation of her burnout, but the detail bit means it's something else. Sounds like that bridge was burned too.
