1. I don't know about his personal life well enough to comment on that, but it does sound reasonable for his writing style. Even if he wasn't any of that we do have to understand there's a lot of historical context we're probably missing and what was written then has probably been discussed and evolved since then. I'm a book nerd and the biggest thing I find about a lot of the popular authors of ancient times, especially in intellectual circles, is that it's very incomplete, most of it is very basic by now, and often times there's a lot of inserted information. The latter of that is probably less likely with Machiavelli as he's more recent but sometimes you read a Roman emperor and you have to wonder how they're interpreted as viewing something in modern terminology only to realize the translator inserted context.

The further back you go, the worse it probably becomes as stories are passed down from sources and context is changed. Just look at something like Islam with strong and weak Hadiths, which they kill each other over constantly.

I had an anthology of his writings in uni, he wrote funny stuff in his letters to relatives. In that era you had to attach yourself to powerful people in the ruling class to make a good living and the best way to do that was to secure a patronage.
