There is a thing such as trauma. Something terrible that happens to a person, giving an explosion of negative feelings when remembering the event, such as the tragic loss of loved ones or some accident truly endangering the person and causing misery. Even respected members of society can have a hard time keeping those feelings in check, but they have to, either for their own good or for the sake of others. It's how we mature and improve. It's a fucking given, even if people might need help to fully achieve it.

That sounds like a symptom of OCD to me. OCD isn't making sure things are clean, it's repeated intrusive thoughts and ritualistic actions that cause distress. He needed to see a shrink, get on medication, and seek therapy to deal with those thoughts. i bet there are other areas of his life where he has irrational thoughts and actions and doesn’t understand why.
