Best of golden age:

Ikari Warriors. One of the funniest episodes of the golden age. Picking a best episode was hard.

I have to agree with that. Kyle Justin really seems like a cool dude, and I especially loved those out-takes where James couldn't hold his laugh. Little songs made by Kyle in that episode were stuck in my head for years. Also, it's so easy to feel that good energy from James, he was really happy around his friends goofing around, and making money that way. This episode is a great example that game that is reviewed doesn't really matter, some overblown skits doesn't matter, friends working together are the most important thing(it sounds like the conclusion of every animation for kids lol). That's also why RLM is so good, I could listen to Mike and Jay talking all day long. You don't even need passion(that's a big word), but for sure you need energy. All that is lacking in slobwave era AVGN.
I'm pretty sure if there were more episodes with Kyle, or better yet Bootsy, those could be equally as good.

The worst episode so far for me is fear and loathing. I didn't bother to finish it
Admittedly the actual reviews in the episode were decent, but that's like 4-5 minutes tops and the rest is just a lame skit. I can't even remember the worst from this year, most were so forgettable, or maybe that's because the past few years of AVGN has taught me to get drunk as hell before watching it just so I can scrounge any enjoyment whatsoever out of it. 2021 has to be his worst year by far, even if nothing in it was as godawful as the worst from the previous year like Life of Black Tiger or that one Christmas episode.

I'll just say Shrek was the worst because of the sheer amount of squandered potential. I said this almost a year ago, but wouldn't it be cool if AVGN were some sort of immortal who's reviewing EVERYONE'S nostalgia and not just his own? I mean why not if the Nerd is going to review shit from after 2000, right? Well too bad, AVGN reviews Shrek which had a fuckton of shovelware games and does fuckall with the premise aside from reviewing 2-3 shitty games and spending half the episode on a dumb skit based on an internet meme that's been dead for 3-4 years now. What a waste of time.

A long time ago I would've said the worst AVGN episode was ROB the Robot or the second Bugs Bunny episode, both because the skits are too long and never worked for me, but holy shit the past decade has so many AVGN episodes that make those two look like shining gold. Comparing ROB the Robot (Episode 100) to Episode 200 is like comparing night and day in terms of quality. Now I'd probably say Life of Black Tiger or that one Christmas episode where he spends 30 seconds reviewing some 90s shovelware console and the rest of the time making unfunny jokes with some guest star.

Not even the first time Kyle Justin did really well in an AVGN episode either. I was rewatching the Spider-Man episode and Kyle really did a good job in that one, and funnily enough in his Spider-Man persona he was actually even angrier than the Nerd in that episode which makes it much more entertaining. To think that in that episode the Nerd and Spider-Man were acting as if they were great buddies is also heartwarming too considering IRL James and Kyle met each other since long ago.

The second half of the Ep 200 video got some chuckles out of me, because it featured some shitty games that I hadn't seen before. Frankly, I could dispense with just about all his skits. They're okay, I guess, but I've only ever tuned in to see him bitch and moan about what a piece of trash some random, old, garbage game is. I guess my enjoyment of any given episode is determined entirely by what percentage of it is showing me a shitty old game versus his bad acting and dumb skits.

Oh boy another compilation video?? Do you agree with the list despite what a lacklustre year it was for AVGN?
I'll save your time and just list the Top 20 in this video. I'm not even gonna bother listing the honorable mentions:
  • 20.: Him reacting to the final boss in Corpse Killer for the 3DO.
  • 19.: The cringe Mr. Rigs segment in Carmageddon 64.
  • 18.: The cringe football rant in the Every LJN Game 3-part episode. The one where he's trying to emulate the one in the Atari Sports episode where how the name of the game was just "Football" but way more forced.
  • 17. Rocket-Beer segment in The Rocketeer episode.
  • 16. The part where he was mumbling about how video games were like gambling in the Vegas Stakes episode. (Seriously? This is considered as a great moment? Granted the special effects were fine but other than that, nothing else great to write about)
  • 15. AVGN talked about an obviously fake story about how his friend died when touching a clown at a birthday party, making fun about how clowns could kill you in the Darkman episode.
  • 14. The unfunny segment where AVGN chants "fuck" in the Baseball part in the Every LJN Game 3-part episode.
  • 13. Seriously? They included the unfunny segment where AVGN wore a wig making fun of the host in the Sega Game Gear VHS episode?
  • 12. Him playing Bop 'N Rumble on the Commodore 64 episode (which later got ported into Bad Street Brawler for the NES). This one is actually alright.
  • 11. The Surfin' Nerd segment in the Every LJN Game 3-part episode. Oh fuck off.
  • 10. The ending to the Shrek episode. The one where he got burnt to death.
  • 9. The ending to the Freddy & Jason C64 episode. The one where he dealt with Freddy & Jason action figures.
  • 8. The domino middle finger segment in the Every LJN Game 3-part episode. This one gets a pass.
  • 7. The cringe segment about the Revolution X soundtrack in the Every LJN Game 3-part episode.
  • 6. AVGN throwing the Greendog SEGA Genesis game onto molten lava.
  • 5. The ending to the Darkman episode. The Pink Elephant one.
  • 4. The Old MacDonald parody in the Freddy & Jason C64 episode making fun of the Friday the 13th Commodore 64 game even had that song to begin with.
  • 3. The cringe Grass vs. Turf rant in the Every LJN Game 3-part episode. Okay, what is James smoking?
  • 2. The part in the Vegas Stakes episode where AVGN reflected on the retro age. Don't worry if you didn't even remember this part, because I sure didn't either. Yeah, I'm really curious what was James even smoking to come up with this list.
  • 1. The ending to the Every LJN Game 3-part episode. End of story.
So yeah, we got a clip show which most of it was based around a clip show episode.

Best and worst episode of the good years and the bad years. For the record, I think the Zombie era officially began when he reviewed Sanic 06. Even though Screenwave got involved with the making of episodes before the Sanic 06 two-parter that particular episode is when it felt out of place when James reviewed a game.

Best of golden age:

Ikari Warriors. One of the funniest episodes of the golden age. Picking a best episode was hard.

Honorable mentions: Dick Tracy and Milo's Secret Castle. I never played either game as a kid but James frustrations at getting stuck so early perfectly summarized that experience where you rent a game and it sucks or you get stuck on the first level and cannot go further and boom, there goes your weekend. I had that experience with Nightshade on the NES, Spider-Man and X-Men: Arcade's Revenge on NES and Alien 3 on SNES. Another honorable mention is for the Paperboy episode because I've always hated that game and James' review was incredibly cathartic. Fuck Paperboy.
I forgot to mention the Beetlejuice episode because that's a game I did rent when I was like 6-7 and I barely remember anything about it other than getting stuck on the first screen. It's easily one of the most cryptic games on the NES it even gives Simon's Quest a run for it's money. There is no fucking way that any kid could figure out what you're supposed to do not unless they read a guide or another kid who read a guide told them.

Seeing how the 1st boss is defeated convinced me that the game was released in an unfinished state.

It's that Justin Silverman has been a major drive in sucking the fun and soul out of Cinemassacre because I used to like the guy's content. He ran his channel with some guy and his dad and sporadically put out some decent irreverent videos, most of which seem to have been deleted to save face (also disabled comments on all vids, maybe to hide what kind of audience he attracted). Seemed to want to be another Mega64 with skits, fake interviews and videos documenting random cons but the channel never really got off the ground despite having a few videos that were briefly popular.

He used to have a video of him playing some game called 'ethnic cleansing' that was funny

2013 was when he got involved with Screenwave and Cinemassacre after hosting the miserable "roast" of AVGN. I remember before the comments were disabled, Silverman responded to someone saying that despite not finding it funny anymore, the panel was what initially launched his career. The relationship established between James and Too Many Games is likely the reason James chose Screenwave over anyone else after the 2014 split with Screw Attack. I don't know where I'd place the point that Screenwave started getting directly involved in the writing of the episodes. Maybe Paperboy in 2016.

Uhm, you know that old guy he used to host with was a pedophile, right?

Fuck no, Justy is just a failed content creator and believe it or not, he does what he can to keep AVGN alive. Ain't easy when Jimmy is again yammering about the shits his kids took this morning or doing a 3-week-long backup of a backup of the backup of his 100TB home videos he shoot in primary school. Or tripping over lamps. Or spending a whole day on drilling a hole. Or excusing himself from work to drive his wife around instead of telling her to buy a monthly ticket already.

James Rolfe is just a clueless retard, he just got out of his predatory contract with Screwattack, then signed another one with Screenwave because it was easier than not pissing off Mike by snoring through James & Mike Mondays.

while the onus is ultimately still on james, Justin ain't helping as much as you'd think. His non charismatic ass should not be in videos in any capacity, same with Kierran. And they should either hire better writers, or become better writers because their tenure as writers is ass...or hire some actual real help, to prevent the stuff you named from happening.

If they really wanted to help James, they should let james suffer and actually fail...maybe that'll light a fire under his ass. If his lazy ass sees the money stop, he'll finally realize he needs to do something about it, instead of being coddled.

It would’ve been a more tolerable episode if either

A. The episode focused on more Shrek games than that one run of the mill fighting game based on Shrek

or

B. Given how half the episode is basically about how films were watched on gaming devices back then, the episode could’ve focused on that instead of Shrek altogether
Or C, didn't involve the guys behind that Shrek Reanimated collab, especially the guy wearing the Shrek Medallion. My expectations for the episode plummeted really hard when I saw them.

There's a whole lot more to it than just that, but there's your starting point.

Wow, that list is comprehensive. Here's an archive: https://archive.md/P5Yco
I tried searching the thread but the keyword turned no results but this guy made a cameo in Chubbyemu's video a while back.
At the 28 second mark, Emu talks about his past and about how he didn't have friends or the chance to get Gengar.
I'm surprised this didn't get posted sooner.
