It seemed very much like a two way street to me. I think Sam definitely remembered the messages because of one discrepancy:
He pauses the video to say he told Ian to "squat 2pl8" (2pl8 means two plate or 225lbs)
Ian in the actual video says 200lbs, then Sam moments later when quoting him says 225lbs.
Clearly he remembered the exact message and it's intention, he wanted Ian to squat 2pl8 but he incorrectly wrote 200/Ian misremembered 225 as 200.
I think he was being disingenuous, as he was the entire time and as his whole personality is, for kicks

Easily could have just corrected it in his head as 225lbs since it’s way more common to talk about that than 200. Doesn’t mean he remembers, just means he knows some very basic shit about how weight equipment.

I think the idea was that to either make iDubbbz visibly uncomfortable or to make everything so over the top it was obviously a gag and you'd have to be retarded to take it at face value. If they actually pulled off the shit on the troll list the video would have been great but they went easy on him so it came off as "pretending to be retarded." A few good moments here or there but not as great as its potential.

So the end result is to 'own' idubbz by making him think Sam is a bigger degenerate than he already is, it doesn't work as iDubbz realizes it's a ruse and doesn't publish it, so Hyde reveals his 'master plan' of le trolling idubbz via this autistically detailed list of cringe things to do while he is there.

I used to hang out with a lot of really crusty people in crusty places when I was younger and the daily reality of associating with that crowd eclipsed a lot of the things on Sam's list, so I've already had my fill of social decay and stupid wigger antics.

The intended comedy lies in trying to trick iDubbbz into thinking Sam & co. have spiralled downwards and are living like the dregs of society now, but it doesn't work because Sam and his friends really are like that. Look at them. Look at how they normally live. If instead of Sam it was the Vsauce guy, then the potential for comedy would be much greater because there's an incongruity to perceive. With Sam, it's just like he decided to be 40% scummier than usual.
