I'd like to think that people connect the dots on all this but I'm sure that gives the electorate way too much credit for critical thinking.

Well... it is somewhat both. The sheer insanity of the left turned a lot of people off. Now politically adrift, they look to the other side for the first time with new eyes. That's when the ideas that they like can snag them so long as nothing is there that severely off puts them.
