'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

Wait, so you downloaded an ISO and you couldn't delete it? What happened when you tried to delete it? An ISO or anything else can't usually just download, execute itself and worm its way through your system without asking for elevated privileges first, unless it's exploiting some kind of back door which you're generally, (not 100% of the time, but generally), safe from as long as Windows and your browser are updated. What was the exact error that came up when you tried to delete it? Did the error come from your browser or from Windows?

Malwarebytes picks up some stuff that Windows Defender doesn't, so it never hurts to give it a try. They are a perfectly reputable company.

Don't take it to Geek Squad. They're retarded and their service is for old ladies.

If you're really worried just flatten it and reinstall Windows.

When i tried to delete it a window came up saying I couldn't because it was in the system files and it came up from windows. Thanks for the advice on Malwarebytes, I was able to get rid of it (it was adware) and a few other nasty things i didnt know about.

crisis averted :)

@Never Scored mentioned it needing to ask for elevated privileges, have you turned that off in windows?

You can also download fully funtional 30 day trials from Eset, F-Secure and most AV vendors. I haven't used one in a long time because I'm not a sucker but I remember Nod32(Eset) being nice and due to national solidarity I also think F-Secure is alright. Give one of those a spin to see if they pick up on anything.

How much have SSD speed and power efficiency improved over the last decade? Wondering if it's worth upgrading from my 2012 SSD.
SATA or not? There's a massive difference between SATA and modern NvME drives. It also depends on what it is used for. For gaming, meh, a SATA drive maxing out at 500MB/read is perfectly fine, games spend part of the loading time decompressing and setting stuff up and that is not related to disk speed. Faster will be better but you will notice that mainly with content creation.

SATA, I'm wondering if I would get better laptop battery life from switching from a 128GB SSD from 2012, to a modern 1TB SSD from 2021.

If the laptop is from 2012 it would be better to get a new battery to improve battery life. I have no idea if the power consumption between SSDs have changed, that's sort of interesting actually but I would have to imagine that it's about the same.

I have a 100WH battery and another 100WH slice battery (Example picture), I'm curious just to see how much battery life I could possibly get. With both I get 16 hours.

According to most PSU calculators I've used NvME is supposed to have a slightly lower power draw than SATA. One SATA device to another it seems to depend on the size of the storage.

Here I am writing another dumbass question but this time featuring Windows 10 retardation (Still using the Lenovo Legion 5 btw)

One day while writing code I started noticing that Windows in its infinite wisdom decided to turn on-screen notifications:
1643157016179.png
(this bullshit applies for caps lock and numlock buttons)

So of course you can realize that seeing that annoying shit in my face while trying to concentrate won't work right? I started looking for answers all around and nearly all of them directed me either to some missing option on the control panel or settings - these options were missing because im using Lenovo.

Long story short: I managed to disable this shit by disabling some option in the Services application. But now Print Screen is not working properly and instead opens some bullshit Windows snipping tool instead of instantly taking a screenshot of the whole screen and copying it to the clipboard. How do I revert this option? I'm starting to lose my shit with each Windows update.

So I have two windows 10 machines, both with more or less the same software. On the Surface, whenever it boots up, two cmd screens open, do something, and close. Usually this is faster than I can react to printscreen it. How concerning is this and what (if anything) should I do?

Its not unusual for some service or program to run a command line script/program on boot that does this. If your virus scans come up clear then I wouldn't worry.

Those are usually programs that check for updates at startup. You can check Task Scheduler and see if there's anything that is set to trigger at logon or startup. Almost always, it'll be one of those scheduled tasks. You can disable/remove them if you don't want them running.

What is a good alternative to google drive? I have been thinking to replace it since it started to decline the card that I have to make the scheduled monthly payments for all my services. I have a lot of files (mostly porn and hentai side jig stuff) and the free 15gb filled filled within a year. Having a way to access the files on the go is a must since I use it to show my portfolio and to share the final product with costumers.

I had Onedrive until it decided to delete some stuff that if I did not had a local copy would have been lost.

Dropbox or Proton? I'm not sure about the former but you can purchase additional storage with the latter. Costs a single USD/EUR/CHF per month or 9 per year for every additional gigabyte.

I need an open source paint replacement that JUST FUCKING WORKS. I intend to use it to create heart shaped sunglasses for my avatar this Valentine's Day and to make memes. I basically need a paint replacement since Microsoft decided to nuke their most basic programs.

Lazpaint doesn't work because I don't know why, it just doesn't work despite me clicking around on shit at random and wanting to throw my monitor out a window. Gimp is Gimp (a piece of shit that requires hundreds of hours of training to do basic tasks). Just give me something that works.
