It's not hard to prime a diesel engine. I can't speak for modern diesels, nor engines of this size. But for IDI Diesel engines all you need to do is crack the fuel unions at the injectors and crank until fuel dribbles out. And then retighten and fire it up again. Some even have a boat priming bulb in between their fuel tank and filter just to do this process without wasting their battery.
