The City of Vancouver is actually smaller than Calgary and Edmonton. The reason is that Calgary and Edmonton aggressively annexed surrounding lands during their suburban expansions. So if you look at their city limits on a map, Calgary and Edmonton are giant blobs with very few outlying towns whereas the Vancouver metro is a bunch of smaller independent cities.

So Edmonton and Calgary are alot like a cross between Oklahoma City and Anchorage Alaska.

Where Vancouver is more like a new Orleans or San Francisco where geography limit their expansion in a nutshell.
