What's the issue with retroarch?
Retroarch commodified emulators.
Have an issue with running a Playstation 2 game? You must not have the right Retroarch core version installed
Trying to use an obscure emulator that runs a game better than any other emulator and the emulator you're using has a problem? Better hope that the devs are still active, or else people will point you towards Retroarch.

Effectively Retroarch collected all emulators into one huge gang, and you're either in the gang (by making a Libretro plugin containing your emulator) or outside it (and fade into obscurity). Its a turf war amongst open source software advocates, of a type which is becoming common as multiple open source packages are tending to target the same use case scenario (such as the multiple forks of OpenOffice).

Retroarch I imagine is so big because they have a killer app - RetroPie, a distro of Linux for the Raspberry Pi that is designed to run Retroarch with a non-technical user interface. Lots of people are loading it onto cheap Raspberry Pi units to run retro games at a fraction of the price of a SNES Mini.

RetroArch's UI/Menu placements fuckin blow too, even with their attempt to fix it since any settings you would want to change are under a web of menus due to controller players
I would rather have a different window pop up to mess with settings on the PC client at the very least
i do like being able to navigate with a controller since my desktop lives next to the livingroom tv, but i can easily see getting frustrated af using mouse and keyboard

I think we only have a month or a little more before the next update, to prove once and for all time that Byuu is still alive. Of course, they will still deny he is alive. They're afraid we'll make them shove that cookie jar up their asses as penance.

I've been watching the emulation scene since iNES was created (Farat is a simp and a bitch, this will never change) but I still use discreet emulators. Fuck RetroArch. I've never seen a good reason to run it. The best emulators all function just fine as discreet software.

If I recall the bullshit reason for him not showing up last time ended with "He had worked for the US government and was thus classed as a secret agent and thus wouldn't appear on death records" or some similar crap.
Can't remember if Hector was the one who said it but I expect that calibre of cope in a good 21 days.

All individuals, including Secret Service special agents, show up in death records if their corpse has been positively identified. Even Witness Protection individuals. It may take sooner or later to show up on record depending on the situation. Date/cause of death can be manipulated. But everyone shows up dead eventually. If Byuu had died in Japan, it would have been noted already. He doesn't seem to have any importance to cover that up.

Is this level of extreme fragility "normal" among these devs? Frankly I'm just sitting here amazed. "Short and quippy" criticism is abyuuse, worthy of Byuuicide?

Just to confirm for my own understanding, the devs in the emulator scene are typically unpaid volunteers, right? Because honestly these people wouldn't even get through one single code-review in a professional development environment without flipping out. They wouldn't last a week.

And I'm not even talking about high-pressure development like the games industry. With this attitude they wouldn't even survive in the slow, plodding, low-pressure corporate environment, if they consider any amount of questioning or criticism to be LiTeRaL vIoLeNcE.
I say this as a programmer: programmers are almost all on the spectrum to some degree. The type of programmer to make multiple cycle-accurate emulators in his spare time for free, much moreso. Whenever you see a cookie cutter genderspecial programmer-socks-wearing Twitter lunatic, you can bet hard cash that person is autistic. Autistic people, to put it lightly, tend to overreact to criticism.

It's a legitimate problem that nobody talks about: these people hate themselves because their autism makes them feel unhappy and "wrong" all the time, but they're also very gullible so they're prime targets for brainwashing into the troon death cult. They're told that the reason they're unhappy is because they're actually magical genderblobs, and when coming out as a genderblob doesn't make them feel better, they're told that it's because transphobes are giving them imposter syndrome or whatever trendy mental illness is cool at the moment. At this point their locus of control is entirely external: imaginary internet Nazis have absolute control over their lives, which causes them to spiral into a deep depression of helplessness and self-hatred.

Nobody over the age of maybe 16 idealizes themselves as a furry baby with angel wings unless they really, really hate who they are IRL. When a 38 year old man is doing it, you know something's incredibly wrong.

I think it's entirely plausible that Byuu killed himself, and I think it is 100% the fault of the echo chamber of furries and trannies who enabled his delusions and psychoses. It wouldn't have mattered how nice we were to him, he'd have found another batch of alt-right fascist transphobes to declare the arbiters of his happiness, even if he had to make them up entirely. Self-realization is entirely forbidden in the toxic internet culture he was part of.

How active is the friend who reported him dead?
Hector has mostly posted on his twitter (@marcan42) about the Asahi Linux (a native port of Linux to Apple M1 Macs) progress. There hasn't been any major milestones in that project, just bugfixes and minor things that nobody without an in-depth knowledge of Linux programming can understand.

He's also critised NFTs (which are the love-it-or-hate-it of cryptocurrency schemes right now) and Richard Stallman, the latter being a major punching bag for younger open source advocates over the past 2-3 years.

The beef the newer open source people seem to have with RMS apparently comes from the "problematic" nature of freedom 0. Where software can be used for *any* purpose, including shitting on troons. Pleroma lead troon dev comes to mind.

I haven't seen an alternative for RetroArch's shader system, the fact that it's universal is a huge boon to it if you're like me and not fond of crispy pixels. Some emulators do have their own shader system but it's not universal like RA's.
