I distinctly remember looking at many (often good) students back in high school and noticing there seemed to be nothing inside these people. They did the work and they got the grades and they said the right things, but they never seemed to exhibit any independent curiosity or agency or rebellion. They were wholly satisfied with their small world precisely as it was presented to them.

I'm glad the NPC/bugman meme came along to give a name to the idea I had no word for 20 years ago.
