In regards to the discussion around police.
Police in blue (left-wing for you Canadians) cities are bastards.
This is due to a myriad of reasons, not least of which is that the entire power structure of that city (and thus its police force) are built around hating anyone who isn't a left-wing bugman. Hell, it's built to hate the bugmen too, its just that the bugmen require that sort of treatment.
The Mayors and District Attorneys (Chief Prosecutor) of these cities put in place the most servile jackboot bureaucrat in the Chief of Police position, and that person picks the most servile jackboot bureaucrat to serve under them and so on until you get to the beat cops.
The Mayors and DAs themselves are both corrupt, and have a mandate from their progressive-communist bugmen voter base to directly attack anything seen as even vaguely right-wing to the deranged eyes of the bugmen base. The Mayors and DAs use the police as cudgel against their newest target, and the Police Chief and his lackeys gladly accept the task.
Anytime you get one of these big events where the police get called to do these disagreeable (to reasonable people) actions, the good police resign, or are fired when they refuse to do the job, and all that leaves is the ones who *will* do those jobs.
Then is comes to actually hiring police, you have many people who have a sense of duty and honor who wont take a job with the police of a city in the first place because they are doing bad things to political enemies. You have the more mercenary sort which while they would be a strict line tower, they wouldn't go out of their way to be complete asshats. However, many of that mercenary sort don't go into police work in the cities because the pay isn't really there in most cases (especially if they could get paid more doing anything else). Then you have a broad mix of the two above.
What does that leave you with? The people who want the powers of a cop (usually for abuse), and the people who see absolutely nothing wrong with the Mayors and DAs going after political and business enemies. Unsurprisingly, this two groups make up the majority of blue city cops.
Blue cities are enemy territory. The leadership, at best, wants to steal from you. At worst, they want you dead. The locals, want to steal from you *AND* see you dead. The legal terrain is fortified against you. And there is no real hope of changing that.
All that being said, I have had nothing but generally decent experiences with with my local rural red (right-wing) state County Sherif and Sherif Deputies. As it turns out, law enforcement is a product of its environment too.

TL ; DR : Blue cities produce bastard-faggot cops, blue cities hate everyone, but non-bugmen in particular. Get out of blue cities and to places which don't actively want to kill you and abuse your kids.
